This game is plain fun. You will make decisions. Sometimes they will be bad. You will spend hours attempting to find the right strategy for each map. learn from my fail. The only strategy that really works is to spam early and spam lots. You will spend the first frantic ten minutes establishing superiority and then combat will taper off. That's just the way the game plays. Whether or not it works on your system is something you will have to try. However, there are demos available and you can find one to try and see if it fits your style. Give it a shot, but don't hold your breath.
Final Word: Demo first, Buy later
I was one of the initial few who bought Z from GOG and had a plethora of problems. Luckiily the developers patched it and, by using only a single monitor, the game works great...
SO! The original Z game in its glory is here and to quote the Bots "Ready to Rock". The game is a challenging RTS that makes use of the most important element in RTS's as its resource " Time". It takes time to build defenses and troops. You can decrease this time by controlling more territory.
There is some luck factors to combat such as troops sniping out vehicle drivers or your troops getting a lucky hit with an explosive that kills a bunched up squad. But this adds to the excitement and makes you plan accordingly.
So, thank you GOG and TickTock for bringing this great port to us.
Fantastic!!! Argh!!! It's a cracker wee game with soo many memories. Struggled to make it to the snowy levels as a young chap. Played it right through once before- have to do so every few years but struggled recently to get my hands on a copy.
Seems great to me. Is slow- but that's what the game was always like from memory?
Otherwise, super good stuff.
This game is great. I played it for hours, days and maybe weeks back in the late 90's and till today, it is one of my Top 10 games to play.
But - in the Remake there are several issues that need to be fixed:
1. Options? There are just some few for Sound/Music on/off. No Controls, nothing.
2. Handling: It is annoying as hell to scroll the Map while pushing the LEFT mouse button. Also: Selection with right click+pull.
No scrollbars where you would expect them.
3. Interface: Due to its tablet heritage the cursor doesn't indicate actions over flags, vehicles etc.
4. AI: At medium difficulty my grunts just stood there beside the neutral sector flag and made no attempt to capture it. Also they let enemies pass to capture the sector behind even if I explicitly ordered them to attack .
I hope those issues will be fixed soon. This game deserves more than a halfhearted tablet port.
The meat of the game is capturing sectors of a map, very much like you do in later RTS game Company of Heroes. This one is of course a sci-fi setting, and more hectic than CoH.
Good: Solid tactics and strategy required. Fast paced. Great cutscenes that are actually funny. Great overall artistic and game design. Sound, music, all very good.
Bad: One of the most Stressful games ever. Ever played a multiplayer RTS game for the first time and had this feeling in your stomach that you are fighting a losing battle and the only way to win is by playing at 150% of your skill? Well, with Z you get the same feeling, but in single player. It's unforgiving. It's ruthless. You can't relax for more than a few seconds if that.
Conclusion. If you want punishment and stressful feeling in your RTS, it's a solid 4 or 5 stars out of 5. If you like RTS but want a more relaxed feeling, it's at best a 3/5 and it is better avoided. Objectively a great game.
