Developed by id Software in 1992, Wolfenstein 3D is a ground-breaking and critically acclaimed, World War II, first-person shooter action game that started the modern-day FPS genre.
Story
World War II rages. You are William ""B.J."" Blazkowicz, the Allies' most trusted agent. The Nazis are planning Operation Eisenfaust, a project to build an unstoppable, mutant army. Your mission was to steal the secret plans, but you were captured and imprisoned in Castle Wolfenstein. Now, a lucky break gives you the chance to make your escape, but a maze of passages and trigger-happy Nazis stand in your way.
'Spear of Destiny' Expansion Included
In this prequel to Wolfenstein 3D, you are William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, the Allies' most valuable agent. During the German Blitzkrieg of World War II, the spear that pierced the side of Christ is stolen from Versailles by the Nazis and secured in Castle Nuremberg. According to legend, no man can be defeated when he wields the spear. Your mission is to infiltrate the heavily guarded Nazi stronghold and recapture the Spear of Destiny before it’s too late.

This game is okay but I would not play it again. I couldn't even finish it because I was so bored. For those who played these games growing up, you'll probably enjoy it more than I did. I suggest starting the Wolfenstein series with the Return to Wolfenstein game becuase at least then you'll walk away with good memories.
Wolfenstein 3D is as timeless and legendary as its more popular outstanding pupil, Doom, albeit it's probably the one of the two that's aged the worst. The premise is as simple as it gets: you're B.J. Blazkowicz, superspy/soldier in WWII. Get in enemy territory, take down all the Nasties in your way, go to the next level, rinse and repeat.
The key to Wolf3D's success is in its gameplay basis: extremely basic and to-the-point yet undeniably addictive. Gunning Nasties down never gets old! Unfortunately the weakest aspect of this game is by far its level design. I understand the constrictions imposed by technical limitations and how much you could do with the engine at the time, but unfortunately Wolf3D's confusing maze-like levels will lead you to get lost very often.
While I consider this gem a true gem and one of those you must play at least once in your life, it's hard to deny it gets old pretty quickly. I consider it a perfect game for short bursts and a little match every now and then, but if you try to beat all of its episodes (plus the Spear of Destiny expansion) in a row, you'll get bored very quickly.
As another piece of advice: you should definitely play this in the ECWolf source port, as it's the most convenient modernized way to taste the original. Alternatively you can get a vast number of interesting recreations of Wolfenstein 3D in the shape of Doom mods.

After several experiments with design in Hovertank 3-D and Catacomb 3-D, id software would finally nail their particular brand of fast rendering technology, bloody action, and trademark edgy style in 1992's Wolfenstein 3-D. It would usher in a renaissance for the fledgling first-person shooter genre and inform the success of their next big hit in 1993's Doom. Check out how the game came to be, whether it's still worth playing, and the impact it left on the industry.
early blocky excrements owes itself to commander keen, hovertank, and catacomb3d.
its unknown who at id was inspired by nazi symbolism, most likely a curiosity with historical events of ww2... certainly to say it has an effect on the idea of the game.
good gunplay, sfx, art.
horrible level design, product of its era.
its no wonder they wanted doom to have nothing in comparison to wolf3d when they were making doom.
open source GPL game engine makes sure it survives today... play in wolfSDL or ecwolf.
Wolfenstein 3D:
- Good game
- Shooting makes fun a lot
Spear of Destiny:
- Main Story as Wolfenstein 3D
- Mission Packs forcing to search after secrets, what I personally don't like
- Mission Packs have also to tightly corridors
- I got Motion Sickness while playing the Mission Packs, but not in the Main Game
Conclusion:
Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny are a must play, but the Mission Packs are optional and do not make fun that much...
