Build your party of six companions, determine their skills, professions, and stats and enter the ancient castle where you’ll find treasure, armor, and powerful magic items to advance your quest. Wizardry VI is a good RPG of its time.
It's "good" in that, for its time, it had a detailed and interesting story, a variety of locations and enemies, and maps that actually felt like they were set out like real locations, not just your computer 18 x 18 grid. The variety of spells, items, classes (and class-swapping mechanic) and monsters also gave it surprising depth to its gameplay.
It's "of its time" in that it expects you to grind. And I don't just mean grind through monsters - I mean through EVERYTHING, even character creation (The cluebook seriously recommends that you spend hours just re-rolling stats. Whee). You will be saving and reloading SO MUCH in this game it is not a joke. There is a free utility ("Cosmic Forge") that at least cuts out the character creation grind, but still.
I recommend it anyway because its depth of play and variety really make it stand out as a quality early 90s RPG. And grinding can be fun - that's how poker machines work!
Wizardry 7 was the first RPG I ever played. I got it in a CD software bundle and learned to play it through trial and error. It says up to 500 hours of play on teh description for these games. I probably had over 2000 hours into W7 and still hadn't explored everything. It's brutally difficult and gives you no direction whatsoever. You are literally dumped into the game world and have to figure everything else out for yourselves. I played this in the days before the internet and I suggest you try and fully explore everything without using it. A word of caution: The game is so huge and long your characters are capable of dying of old age. My original party began to drop dead and I had no idea why, it took me while to notice that the ones dying were 99 years old and when you roll over to 100 you die. There is an item used to reduce your age by a year for each one used, but I'm not going to tell you where to find them. BUY THESE GAMES!
These games are essentially complex tabletop games programmed into a computer. So far in Wizardry 6 I'm spending as much time with my graphing paper as I am with the computer screen. I'm okay with that! It's VERY challening, but also extremely satisfying to conquer an area. My long term plan to complete 6,7 and 8, transfering my party from game to game. I have a family, job and other hobbie so it will likely take me several years, but it will be a fun journey.

This is why I have a GoG account. Moments like this. If you want a tough, hard-nosed, old-school experience, look no further.
Back then, you had to roll entire parties, lots of choices, the fights were hard, the difference factions made for a great experience.....just buy it already. Hall of Fame games right here. Don't even wait for a sale.
