Nostalgic!
Back 20 years ago, I played the pirate version and now I finally made my contribution via GOG. The version has been well adapted to Win10. The only problem is that it seems the version doesn't contain soundtrack of the original Warlords III which is a masterpiece at that time. Please let me know if it has been included.

Looks can be deceptive
At first glance the rather tame visuals (even for 1998) might be off putting, but this is one of the best turn based D&D themed strategy titles of the era. Only "Master of Magic" and Heroes of "Might and Magic III" best it IMO. It may be pretty formulaic and relatively simple, but everything about it just works. After MoM and HoMM3 this is my 3rd favourite game of it's genre and for under a fiver it's waaaay worth every single penny over and over. If you are into this sort of thing it is a must buy!

Game 5 star Crashes often though beware
This game works maybe one time in ten, IF I'm lucky. There are all sorts of glitches and bugs in the game. It will cut out on you, usually early in your first turn, after restarting it. If you can get a few turns in, you are lucky and it will keep playing. Otherwise, just restart, make a few moves and see if you can save it. If you can save it, the game will probably be ok...if it crashes, oh well, try again.

Timeless Classic
I was digging around in my garage and found my old Warlord's III: Darklords Rising strategy guide from way back in the day and thought to myself... I wonder... Sure enough, the game was available from GOG and installs and runs great on a modern machine. As for the gameplay, it has aged very well and remains an excellent turn based tactical fantasy game. The graphics are as good or bad as they were back then, they are simple and get the job done nicely. The game really shines in just the sheer amount of content, the various challenging scenarios to play, and lack of bloat as mentioned in another review. If there were any part that I would consider somewhat lacking, it would be that it isn't the greatest (though not the worst either) at explaining its various mechanics to you - hence why I purchased the strategy guide back then. If you like fantasy strategy games that are turn based, like a lot of bang for your buck, and are willing to spend a little bit of time getting to know the game, I really think there is a good chance you will find a game that will stick with you for life like it did for me. Very happy to play this one again!

WELL worth playing
This games is the apex of turn-based old-skool strategy games. Great music, easy to play but with a LOT of options for how your conquer the board and manage your resources. Random loot and quest-based exploration on top of combat. Such a well done game that still stands up for anyone looking to play a piece of video gaming history that delivers the fun.
