A Diamond in the Rough
There are not many games that i come back to after completing them, and this one is one of the honored few. I played it in a gaming cafe when it first came out, i played it almost two decades ago when i got my first PC, and now, almost two decades later. The nostalgy, the feel of the game, its asthetics, the small details in unit and structure design, the voice acting, music and audio design that elevates the entire experience, its all incredible. And not because its set in the WHFB universe from which it takes inspiration and design, but what the developers did with it. There are downsides as well, mostly on the gameplay side. The maps feel empty with armies so small, and the melee turns into a blob too quick without a pause/slowdown button, and the units feel too same-y at times, with little else separating them from one another than just numbers. That said, i warmly recommend the game. Even 19 years after its release, its still fun, its still badass, it still holds up even against its peers like Warhammer Total War, and it will be a game that i will keep coming back to for many years to come.

There is a distinct lack of Tzeench in the game, other than references, but still an amazing classic. no stone shall be left standing out of 10!

Retro Charm – hoping for editor
Warhammer: Mark of Chaos (Gold Edition) is still a hidden gem in the RTS space. The quick battles remain as thrilling as ever — armies clashing in dark, gothic landscapes, with quirky voice acting that adds to the atmosphere. It’s not about base-building like other RTS titles, but about commanding brutal fantasy clashes, one wrong turn against other players, and the decent AI in skirmish the outcome pivots quickly. On GOG, the game runs well once forced to a dedicated GPU on Win 11, and being DRM-free makes it easy to enjoy again. One note: the included version is missing support for the map editor that was an option for the original US retail release from my research on ModDB. That editor config appears to hint at things like 8-player battles and scenario tweaks — which would be a massive addition if restored. I’ve opened a thread on the forum about this for anyone interested in technical details or helping explore a fix. Overall, this is a fantastic and unique RTS worth picking up — and with GOG’s support, it could become even better.
