Meaty Civil Warfare

I was expecting Ultimate General: Civil War to be a simplified Total War experience. In some ways it is; there's technically only four unit types although the units themselves are very versatile and customizable. There's also no statecraft type gameplay like managing cities, but that is a positive for me since battles are typically what I want from this type of game. The real kicker though is that the gameplay of Civil War type musket/rifle battles is what I would describe as a Meatgrinder. Total War games tend to be very decicive. If a large portion of your army routs, that's more or less the end of the battle. In UG: CW, routing is just a part of the game, and even rookie troops will quickly return to battle to be thrown back into the Meatgrinder. This is brutal, tactical warfare at its best. Because routing and has been made into something that is easier to happen but less destructive when it does, battles "flow" better than any Total War game I've played and are a constant dance of routing, overstretching, counterattacking and redrawing battle lines. Furthermore, the battles often have interesting objectives, can continue over more than one engangement with both enemies and allies reinforcing the battlefield from different sides and will take place on multiple maps before the battle connects all the maps together for an absolute drawdropping scope of battle. Think the Historical Battles of the Total War games, but with units you have rectuited, leveled up and equipped over many consecutive battles. A must play for people who want a Total War experience that captures the brutality of Civil War combat where your poor troops routing is just another chance to throw them back into the Meatgrinder.

A great follow up to Ultimate General Gettysburg

An incredible game. The negatives first: Some historical inaccuracies, CSA campaign ends very abruptly, broken units regroup too easily, difficulty spikes can be pretty hefty. Very detailed, fun to play, and manages to avoid becoming a "force concentration simulator". Thousands of troops, represented by smaller numbers of models, go at each other, with deep mechanics and difficult choices to make. You need manpower to recruit, but you need money to arm your soldiers. Resource management and getting the right equipment is key. If you carelessly get your men killed, you'll find yourself unable to field an army later. You can ask your government for additional supplies, but that lowers your standing with them and lowers troop morale. Morale is very important; wavering units can barely fight. Units can reform easily after being routed, but after taking too many losses (about 80%), they "shatter" and you lose the entire unit. WIll you use your depleted veterans to capture that strategic piece of cover, or will you save them to fight another day? Oh, and Lincoln/Davis is watching. Make one mistake too many and it's game over. Artillery is nicely detailed: Heavy short range guns devastate enemy charges while longer ranged guns silence enemy artillery and harass their units from afar. You can't just spam cavalry; they have no cover and will get shattered instantly if they try to attack an unengaged enemy unit. The sides are genuinely unique, with the Union getting more money and manpower while the Confederacy gets recruits with higher veterancy. Playing as the Union is somewhat easy, as you get so many toys and the best artillery, your men can gain experience on the fly and become unstoppable with their superior equipment. Playing as the Confederacy is a real challenge, as not only do you have to defend (or sometimes even attack) against superior numbers, but you also cannot afford heavy casualties. A must have for any history geek, Civil War aficionado or strategy gamer. I am looking forward to the developers next games Ultimate Admiral and Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts

Bugy and cheap

Pros: Nice looking Lots of potential Cons: AI of your units sometime does not respond Bugs causing unit to get stuck Creates difficulty by giving AI more and better units creating feeling of cheapness AI cheat by knowing about your inputs, even when they are use on units that are not visible to AI Game timer change with at arbitrary pace Bugs causing the game telling you lost even when you won and puttting you to harder mission as punishment (this might be another cheap trick to raise difficulty, since they do not expect you to win the previous one) Tutorial gives you downright wrong tips Every defeat feel like being cheated by AI Victories do not feel satisfying

I need more

Отличный варгейм! Простой в своей основе. Управление отрядами классическое для ртс, а не как в других варгеймах, нужно пол часа учиться, как двигать юнитов. Простая, но красивая и информативная графика. Свои задачи выполняет. Не полностью схематичная на табличках и картинках, как в совсем страшных варгеймах. Потрясающее звуковое сопровождение. Выкрики солдат, грохот орудий, пушек. Пороховой дым. Отлично погружает в атмосферу. Варгейм передает стиль ведения той войны. Чтобы победить, нужно делать то, что делали армии севера и юга в той войне. Постоянно маневрировать на флангах, стараясь зайти стрелковой линией во фланг стрелковой линии противника. Из-за этого изначальная локальная стычка превращается в тяжелый лобовой бой нескольких десятков тысяч бойцов, т.к. ни одна сторона не может объватить другую. Менеджмент своей армии. Добавляет вариативности и реиграбельности. Выбирайте состав своих корпусов, их специализацию и вооружение. Историчность и свобода. Исторические битвы воссозданы максимально правдоподобно, вплоть до кукурузного поля или отдаленной фермы. Подразделения и командующие так же находятся именно там, где были в этом сражении. При этом присутствует возможность повернуть историю вспять и отразить северную агрессию, если угодно. Или же закончить историческую многодневную битву силами пары батальонов за несколько часов, удержав фланг, который в реальности был сдан вашей армией. Я не фанат варгеймов. Они мне кажутся скучными, уродливыми и излишне сложными. Но Ultimate general перевернул мое представление о варгеймах. он динамичный, красивый, он погружает в атмосферу гражданской войны, а в своей основе обладает простым и интуитивно понятным для любого игрока в стратегии управлением. Беда одна - игра заканчивается. А разработчики после ultimate general переключились на иные проекты. Так хочется еще ultimate general. Может про другую войну 19-го века. Франку-прусскую, крымскую. Я согласен на все, лишь бы получить еще подобного варгейма.
