Tyrian 2000

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I didn't find this game terribly engaging. The difficulty seems too hard, where upgrades cost far more than you can realistically gather in a mission and so your guns are constantly underpowered and make it even harder to kill enemies and get money, and the plot seems to be mostly hard-to-follow gibberish (I completed the first chapter and was greeted with... some kind of head impaled on a weird alien stake? What did that have to do with anything??) I do appreciate the variety of weapons and enemies, but I don't find it fair or fun to get through a long stage of shooting performing flawlessly, only to have the end stage boss that takes up 75% of the screen ram into you and kill you in one hit in a way you can't avoid unless you were lucky enough to already be moving in the opposite direction. It seems like most of the five star reviews are fueled by nostalgia from playing it when they were younger, and hey, good for them, and good for GOG for giving it away free, but it's definitely not for everyone.

This to this day is the ONLY vertical scrolling shooter I have ever finished. I have hated these type of games since I was a kid and for some strange reason, this game, with its silly wit, humor and very nice soundtrack kept me hooked till the very end. It has a pretty interesting path system wich allows for replayability as there are planets you can do while skipping others, each one having hidden levels and many other goodies. No seriously I hate these type of games, yet for some reason, I totally love this one. The story and not so cleverly disguised puns on big corporations enticed me. Check the soundtrack too!::D

Who wants to play any of the millions of side scrollers when you could play the vertical scroller Tyrian? Over the years since Tyrian I have searched high and low for more games that scrolled vertically and let you control a ship with a mouse and found none. It seems this infinitely superior mechanic has vanished into thin air. Luckily our friends at GOG have resurrected this wonderful game. I remember playing it for the first time back in Jr. High. Spent the entire night with a friend customizing our ship, taking turns trying to beat levels, getting better and better powerups and weapons. There is just something excellent about the fluidity of the gameplay in this game that sets it apart from all the other flight scrollers out there, most of which are stupid side scrollers anyway. Act now and grab this title. If you gamed in the 90's, you won't regret it.

Its very similar to Raptor: Call of the Shadows; just a little more futuristic. The music in the game is great too along with the graphics. Greater shooter game in my opinion.

TYRIAN 2000 is one of very few Top-Down 'Plane' games I have ever played. It is also the best one I have played. It's not as difficult as I would've thought i to be, and graphics/artwork really do look good for the game's time. I was also pleasantly surprised by the rather in-depth story. Collecting cubes could reveal a lot about locations, people, and events in the game's universe. The ability to customize your ship with gadgets and weapons is also a neat feature not seen in many other games like this. The two player mods are also pretty cool and can add a lot of fun to the game. If your into classic top-down shooters, Tyrian 2000 is a must with its clean visuals, fast gameplay, and the catchy soundtrack.
