[Glares Silently]

The Good The game is just a lot of fun. You feel important from the beginning of the game, including a choose-your-own-adventure that sets the stage and makes you feel like more of a character and less of a blank slate. It makes sense why a lot of people are scared of you. You can [Glare Silently] at people, which is something I never knew I needed. You don't have to be awful to people if you don't want to, and your actions have consequences that aren't kept secret or only available in a game guide: you can just turn on the feature. The voice acting is unexpectedly good, and the main players of the game don't feel interchangeable or forgettable. This writing is really world class and what I've come to expect from Paradox. The Bad There is a lot to read if you like that. If you don't like that format (think Arcanum or Baldur's Gate), then this really isn't the game for you. The font isn't scaled so if you have a small monitor you may have to play at a lower resolution so it doesn't become text for ants. Don't give yourself eye strain, and eat a carrot. The combat is really chaotic and if you're playing at a higher difficulty it grinds to a halt. You'll be micromanaging every move. If you don't like that just play on story difficulty, you filthy casual. The Ugly The difficulty curve jumps straight up after the tutorial level. If you're playing on a higher difficulty you need to start researching at the first camp and go into your fights prepared. The game does not baby you at all and you will die a lot if you take it lightly. For the steep damage you take there are very few healing abilities with long cooldowns, and the game punishes you incrementally when allies fall in battle. TL;DR If you like games like Arcanum, Fallout (the originals), Baldur's Gate and particularly Paradox' Shadowrun games, and you want to play a complicated role in a very well-developed and well-written high fantasy world, you will probably like this game.

Excellent RPG with realistic (as opposed to idealized) ethics

For the record, I'm a Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale veteran, and I liked this game very much. Okay, let's get over the few things which cost it one star: The campaign system is a wee little restrictive, for instance you can't visit places if you don't get a quest unlocking them. Also dialogue options are sometimes a little limited, forcing you to adopt an attitude you maybe didn't want to have at that point. Well, I guess it is because it is safer for beginners that way, and it makes sure you won't accidentally break some important quest, but it is nevertheless slightly annoying for RPG vets like me, or for tourists who just want to go sightseeing. On the other hand there are several very different choices you have to make. Everyone in the game has a (contradictory) agenda, so you can't just please everyone, you'll have to make choices (and enemies!). There are also several interesting companion NPCs you can "hire", and the game will be quite different depending on who you will actually lug around, especially since those companions also have their own agendas. All this makes for a great replay value, I can imagine at least 4 completely different playthroughs, following either one of the three main factions or none of them (which is also an option). The world itself is great, the NPCs are interesting and believable, there are plot twists you don't see coming, and most of all, it doesn't have the usual, Disney-level, 1-dimensional "Good Guys vs. Bad Guys" ethics you normally see. In Tyranny everybody is all shades of good and bad and, like in real life, everything is just choices (sometimes difficult ones) the player has to make in all conscience, and which usually have consequences later on. Wanna be a jerk or a goody-two-shoes? You'll get what you deserve - but not necessarily so... Don't believe the silly "forces of eeevil have won..." marketing blurb, there is way less "Evil" in Tyranny's world than in our own. The supposedly "bad" guys in Tyranny are actually trying to do the right thing, and the supposedly "good" guys are in reality total self-serving jerks, so who is "good" and who is "bad"? Easy: Like in real life, the winners are always "good", the losers are always "bad", so you need to make sure you're on the "right" side in the end... The whole setting (world) is quite compelling, and if there is one thing I regret, it's that there won't ever be a sequel... I would *really* like to see how Kyros will react to the player's ambitions...

Original, dark, focused, streamlined.

Once the game begins and the players starts delving in its world, what strikes first is the world's originality. No Orcs, Elves, good guys vs bad guys - the game steers clear from Tolkien and his overtaxed legacy. The player will wade their way through an ancient land ravaged by brutal war and magic of terrifying power being himself a harbinger of even more of this carnage and magic. The brutality of war and the carnage, past and present, is the constant backdrop of its world as the player gradually becomes a central part of it. Compared to more usual fantasy settings this one is darker and more mature. If you expect NPCs (either your own or others) to be humorous or even courteous to each other you'll be disappointed. The game conveys a seriousness and maturity all along the way and through all of its aspects: The story, the writing, the choices. This is a dark, enthralling world where everyone is for themselves and whatever order there is, it is established and maintained through power and violence. Apart from the world, what sets Tyranny apart from other CRPGs is its hostility towards frivolity. There no frivolous "fetch" or "steal" side-quests. In fact there are very few side-quests overall and those which exist are somehow intertwined with the main story. I really loved this tight and focused quest structure as I've grown tired of going around doing errands just to level-up my characters. Also, there's no awkward inventory system, no weight limits, nothing that adds dead game. Where the game adds lots of weight is the combat system. Combat in Tyranny is fluid and dynamic and its amount overall is well balanced but the maze of offences/defences/damage/armor/weapon types and the numerous bonuses/afflictions require thoughtful approach which sometimes becomes a headache. That said, a very creative and open spell system and an amazing emphasis on unique weapons adds both lustre and substance and saves the day. Overall a very enjoyable game, highly recommended.

Rather disapointing

The game is great on a first playthrough but after that I noticed a number of critical flaws in this game. The number of NPCs is very limited (I still want game that would be close to Baldur's gate 1) and they are very predictable. Something I hope will never happen again in gaming development - about 10% of areas are locked based on your choices during the initial game phase where you just use text to specify some choices. Basically you have to replay the game few times to access those few exclusive areas and heaven forbids you make wrong choices - if you chose to go to some area during "initialisation" and go to the other one during the game you will have a limited access to it and... you'll still get locked out of the other part. Really bad design. [SPOILER, though I'll try to be vague:] Finally, the game ends with a cliffhanger as some say, but for me it's a perfect stalemate. You hit the capital with 'supreme magic', same used by the overlord (the almighty being ruling the continent) thus indicating you have gained similar power and now you can nuke each other with said power if one goes too far.

This is the ONE

When Obsidian told us, they'll make a new game in the style of the old Baldur's Game titles, I was all over it. Pillars of Eternity came out and... It was pretty good. It wasn't groudbreaking. But still, it was good. Then, I decided to give the "b-side" a shot. You see they made this other game as well, called Tyranny... Girls and boys (and all i between and over), this is THE ONE. A game, similar in mechanics, except all of it is just refined enough compared to Pillars to be pretty much flawless. The story is much more clean-cut - meaning it's more meaningful and more driven, but also more compact and way more interesting. Even if the plot ends very abruptly (and it does), it feels way more engaging The graphics are way more stylish as well. You can take a look at an NPC and know what they're all about. Also, they're better written. In a nutshell: this is a shorter, more refined, more imaginative, more... well original take on a "baldur's gate" style game. And you can beat it in a couple of days.
