Fun but simple city building game
So, I've been trying out some of these economic simulation games lately. I'm not normally a big fan of the genre but my brother is and I thought I'd give some of them at least a few hours of playtime to see if they deserve a fair look. Of the few I've tried so far, I found myself getting the most into this one. I have no experience with the Tropico series, so I'm not sure how well it stacks up to the others, but I really got into the Carribbean/Latin flare of the whole thing, and enjoyed the humor and the factoids about dictators around the world. The game has a really good flow to it once you get into it. Managing the resources and population of a small island nation, but constantly having to improve on your infrastructure and economy in order to stay afloat. The things that did bug me about the game, were, I found the islands too small, and combat. Combat is pretty stupid in this game. You can't actually control your troops directly, so you just have to build defenses in places where you think enemies will show up, so in order to effectively protect your island, you need a gigantic military infrastructure, which ends up being a huge drain on your resources any time you don't need a military. I honestly found this part of the game to be pretty frustrating, but other than that I really enjoyed my time with Tropico.

Good game hampered by bad UI
Tropico 5 is a fun concept with decent graphics and good music but ultimatly a slog to play because of the less than stellar interface. Attempting to do anything more in depth than low healthcare = build hospital is an exercise in frustration. Most things are managed through a single screen that links to other screens but doesn't have a back button or any way to compare anything. The biggest sin though, is if you drill down into a state, say Unemployment, there is no way to 'drill up.' You MUST load a different tab, then reload the tab you were on and drill back down to where you were before. I get the feeling the game wanted to focus on a higher level of gameplay than the gritty details, but then why even have them in the game? There is no easy way to keep on eye on anything except the very basics like your treasury account and population happiness. Want to keep on eye on faction (militarists, environmentalist, etc) status? Or foreign powers? or the housing/homeless level? For each of these you must remember to do so, bring up the single managment screen and click a thousand different places to try to find what you want. The game has a very high level of detail which would normally be good, but you can't take advantage of it because it's impossible to manage anything. These are compounded by the complete lack of an explanation anywhere of basic game concepts like how workers get to their jobs, how far do they travel for entertainment, etc. I will say I found these problems tolerable and found a lot of enjoyment in the game playing either 1) in free play were I could meticulously design and build my island, or 2) playing as a crazy dictator who doesn't care about anything but making money in his/her Swiss bank account and just does weird things because they can. In conclusion, if you want to make Caribbean Germany, skip it. If you want to make Caribbean North Korea, I'd recommend it.

An excellent strategy game with humour!
Tropico 5 was released on Playstation 4, back in mid-2015. I played it a lot, and now I own it on my AMD A10 computer, which runs Tropico 5 on medium graphical settings. Tropico 5 is a complex game that can take 1 and 1/2 hours to pass a mission - this is much cooler than other strategy games, since most strategy games are designed to end in 10 or 15 minutes. My favourite thing about Tropico is the slow pace, the great soundtrack and the humour. On the downside Tropico 5 has frequent coup attempts and rebel attacks which can make the game very frustrating. The expansion packs are interesting and worth having, they add a couple of extra sound tracks and cool scenarios. I love all the characters with the exception of the radiohost who owns the Jolly Roger.
