Trine: Enchanted Edition

Trine is a side-scrolling action platform/puzzle game developed by Frozenbyte, originally released in 2009. A remake of Trine called Trine: Enchanted Edition was released. It ports the game to the Trine 2 engine and adds online multiplayer. The gameplay consists of controlling and switches between three different characters (a wizard, a thief, and a knight) to try to complete levels filled with enemies, lots of great puzzles and many secret treasures. There is also a experience system that is shared among all characters, and is incremented by acquiring bottles found throughout levels. Every 50 experience points, each character is given one point towards the purchase of upgrades to their abilities. After so many years this is still one of the best local/online co-op experiences I've seen. Wanted to like it...

This game has a fascinating concept; you can switch between playable characters whenever you want, there are lots of neat ideas for puzzle gameplay, and there's combat, and a freakin' grappling hook. What more could you want? In practice, however, this game is clunky and difficult to play due to poor controls, bad depth-of-field, and an atrociously bad co-op mode. I've played through most of the game multiple times on multiple platforms in hopes that I was just missing..something, but the truth is that controlling your character is, while obviously possible, is awkward and inefficient. It's nearly impossible to stop on a dime, the gravity feels unnatural for no given reason, sometimes the controller is just mapped wrong (and modding controller scheme is only partially supported, and then not well). While you're struggling to get comfortable with your character(s), you also have the unfortunate problem that the gameworld is cluttered. It's beautiful to look at, but playing in it is a mess. You can't tell whether a fallen tree is just there for parallax decoration, or whether it's blocking your path; there's no depth perception at all. Sometimes there will be ditches or pits that you fall into because you couldn't see the pit in the first place. Fair enough, I guess, but then you spend 10 minutes trying to get out of the pit, but you can't figure out what object around you is "in front" of your character, "behind", or on the same plane. It's all trial-and-error, like a bad point-and-click adventure game, except instead of constant clicking for clues, you're clicking around just to figure out which way you can move. I've tried Trine 2 and found it just as useless. I stopped trying by the time Trine 3 came out.

Wow! Just wow!

I bought this game on the cheapest GOG deals with no big expectations and tried it out because it looked very beautiful. I got stuck immediately and the music + graphics + gameplay + physics is just stunning and fun. First I thought Lost Vikings, but then I changed my mind to Castlevania and then Avatar and also a little bit of Bionic Commando. It's a combination of all of them and it's totally awesome. One of the better games I've tried the last years. Deadly recommended!

A wonderful little game

Was suprised how good it looks. The game is graphically great. The puzzles and platforming are at a good level for a relaxing and fun time. You can adjust the difficulty as you fit even during gameplay if you find it to be either to hard or to easy. You can either play it solo or play with somebody else. There are 3 different characters/classes and they have all their own strenghts. Can easily recommend it if you want a beautiful and fun little platformer with puzzles.

NOT just another puzzle platformer.

I will be the first to admit I have been one of those people complaining about the mass influx of puzzle platformers. I even thought up an acronym: YAPP (Yet Another Puzzle Platformer) and have been downright avoiding them. I only bought Trine because it was on sale...and I'm glad I did. Trine is one of my favorite games. It's not a "kiddy" game. It's not exactly a "retro" game. The puzzles are challenging, but also fun and satisfying. Knowing which of the three characters to use for each part is half the fun. The graphics are 3D and highly detailed, and when you change characters, the perspective even changes slightly. The keys are well mapped and the controls are intuitive. Despite the highly detailed graphics, the game brings back memories of Apple II/C64 platformers like Crisis Mountain and Dino Eggs, with a little Miner 2049er thrown in. It also brings in many modern twists such as realistic world physics, and knowledge of these physics will greatly help you solve the puzzles. Even the magic relies on realistic physics, and it's not just zapping fireballs everywhere. If you love platformers, buy this game and experience it. If you are sick of puzzle platformers, buy this game anyway and see just how a game can be great and a modern classic even if it's from an oversaturated genre. There are many YAPPS out there. Trine isn't one of them.
