Is not nearly as good as the Original

This is a fun game when playing the computer but is basically a stalemate when playing against other very experienced players. Going from the Original Total Annihilation to this was a huge step Down. We were thrilled when it came out! Then sorely disappointed. I had the same experience when first playing my friend head to head, then a week later playing my Brother head to head. After several hours of deadlock, My friend announced, " I don't want to play this anymore". A week later same thing.. my Brother said the same thing. That was new for all of us. ( I was thinking the same thing as the game lingered on. I was being polite to my guests...they were right). If your new to these games you might have a different experience. Do Not judge the original based on this sequel and its expansion. Total Annihilation Commander Pack is a steal at the price you can get it for on GOG. Just buy it! TA Kingdoms was a huge misstep for the designers. ( The theory was "Less is Better", but it failed.

If good graphics would equal fun....

...than THIS game would beat old TA by miles. But it doesn't. Why is this so? Basically, TA:Kingdoms is a slowed down version of the original TA with more factions,way better graphics but less resource management and less fun. The factions are not balanced well against each other, as are the units. Theres a faction relaying mostly on swimming units - so when theres no water, theres half of your army useless... The units are not well balanced: as soon as you get ranged units, you will build only them, because in masses, they beat melee fighters 4 to1 if not better. And it will be only unit masses in mid- to endgame. But the worst is: compared to old TA, there is no "to and fro", the fighting is not dynamic. The units behave like zombies, one after another in a row slowly shambling across the landscape... Were it not for the good music, the very good graphics and the name .. hey, there's TA in it.. I wouldn't have bought it back then and wouldn't recommend it now. Which I don't, in fact.. buy it and take this as an example how small changes in game design can ruin most of the fun and the dynamic - and that good graphics doesn't equal fun.

My personal favorite RTS

A couple of years back I found TA:K in a bargain bin for 3 dollars so I decided to buy it. I found it to be quite possibly the most fun, well balanced, and interesting RTS'es I have played. The game-play is heavily strategic in which you need to construct builder units to make structures. These units require a barracks in order to produce. But, like any good RTS, TA:K made a system where you need to build these structures in mana hot-spots called lodestones. You can build without mana but it's so slow it's practically suicide. You can play as one of four kingdoms each of which has a special ability. The kingdom of Zhon are very good at massing units but have practically no defensive structures. The kingdom of Veruna are very good at producing sea based units but lack in land unit production. The kingdom of Taros are fantastic at building offensive units but lack in defensive units. The kingdom of Aramon are great at building defensive structures but lack in offensive units. These kingdoms are balenced to accustom your play style. If you like making a fortress to protect your precious lode stones then go with Aramon. If you prefer to zerg rush it, then go with the kingdom of Zhon. And if you get bored playing the very smart computer (i'm still getting my ass kicked by the AI) then there is still a thriving multi-player community. Sadly the makers of TA:K, cave-dog studios, have shut down so there official multi-player service is gone which means you'll have to play on a server. If you even have the slightest tinge of strategy then you MUST play Total Annihilation: Kingdoms!

TaK: The New Era Expansion Project

Have you guys heard about this outstanding mod? It makes tak a great game with 4 tiers finished and pretty well balanced. All 5 races have melee, range, air, water, and structures that beats any RTS game now in days. Fun doesn't equal graphics but game play does. You can achieve great land, water, and air fights with this mod. Comes try it at: kingdoms.heavenfourm.org. You won't be disappointed. 4.2 is the latest version and it is currently under progress. The creator of this mod has also released a map pack with 51 maps, all taken from the Book of Darien and Iron Plague campaigns in result with 2-8 player battles with grouped manas spreaded all over these great terrains. A Wonderful Game!

This game sucked so many hours out of my life when it first came out. I remember it was one of my first significant forays into both map editing and RTS playing. It keeps true to the Total Annihilation theme of combat between large, hulking behemoths rather than an onslaught of underarmored, underpowered goons. Granted, it hasn't aged particularly well and there are some small issues with the map editor (tile alignment being a big one if I recall correctly), but it's still a solid purchase - ESPECIALLY at $5.99! You won't be disappointed!
