Tomb Raider GOTY

Ignore the salty ones who are probably in their 40s and cannot accept a modernising game. You cannot review a reboot based on the original's merit. It is called a "reboot" for a reason. Graphics is as good as it could get back in 2013. Game looks gorgeous even in 2021 and I still envy whatever hair conditioner Lara is using. Those crying about the "graphical violence" probably never played any new game after 2005. Weapons and combat system are typical of the modern TPP action games with QTEs. 4 main upgradable weapons and 1 melee. Platforming is mostly around jumping, holding onto ledges, and climbing craggy walls with the ice axe. Main game puzzles can be a drab sometimes (particularly the jammed elevator and the hanging cage towards the end) but the tomb puzzles are more creative and fun. They probably overdid it a bit with the collectibles as it felt there were too many different things to collect but all just provide XP in terms of rewards. Story is pretty average but I like how they mixed the realistic elements with the supernatural. Voice acting is superb. The UI for the menus can be clunky which is the -1 star. Played using XBOX Series X|S controller and support is out of the box in Win10. Controls are intuitive and capture the console gameplay. I only play with a gamepad on PC so I cannot comment on mouse/keyboard. Games like these are best experienced on a gamepad anyway. Overall a game that can hold its ground with current/newgen titles. Best to grab during sale.

I purchased this game elsewhere but can't bring myself to spend money on it again, even at GOG. Tomb Raider has a reputation for fun this game (and #2 that came afterward) doesn't uphold. There are some aspects of the gameplay that are very good, and the graphics engine is okay, but the game is severely lacking for the main character, story and setting. There's nothing about this game that would place it as an actual Tomb Raider series game, so it's essentially only Tomb Raider in name, nothing else. There are some great things about the gameplay mechanisms that would be nice to see in a Tomb Raider game that was more true to the story/themes and gameplay of the historical Tomb Raider games. Playing the game is a unenjoyable punishment after a certain point, it gets lame and boring fast once you play it through about half way. Rather than being a Tomb Raider adventure game with puzzles and ancient ruins, this game is more gristly, unpleasant, jarring and scary as if developers were attempting to place the game into the same genre as Resident Evil.

This is not Lara Croft but some distant psychotic relative of her that escaped from some sort of a rehabilitation program right into the jaws of some cult, where they teach her how to become a sadistic killer. If you realy want to experiance Tomb Raider which in reality is an adventure comperable to Indiana Jones movies and Lara in her full glory and beauty then go for TR Legend and TR Aniversary. This TR 2013 would not recommend it even if it was free... at least not under the title Tomb Rider and certainly not introducing younger Lara Croft.

Recently bought an ASUS Radeon RX 6800 XT and unfortunately the game can't even be played with it. 😓 If I'm lucky I can get past the intro movie before the game crashes. Otherwise it crashes after a couple of seconds in the menus. This game works perfectly on Steam though with the same computer and graphic driver which makes no sense at all. And other people reports this as well. Please fix this GOG - I rather play games here instead of Steam!
