Buy It!
If you have any interest in stealth games then you owe it yourself to buy this game. Having always loved stealth games this was one i was very happy to find here on gog. Recommend that you also get one of the high res mods to be able to play in higher resolution and with better textures. 5/5

Great but T:DP is better
I actually give this 4.5 stars, not 4, but since it is less than T:DP, I picked 4. The story is not as good as T:DP. The variety of enemies is not as good. I understand they wanted to create a bunch of copies of the Assassins mission in T:DP, as that level is a gem, but they got rid of the enemy variety in the process. It is the same game from beginning to end. I think there is only one or two Haunts in the entire game, and you could completely miss them, and those guys will make you sweat. They are sorely missed. The ghosts are missed. All of it. Almost always you are up against human enemies of the same types. Great but not perfect I think. More Thief, bigger missions, some new ideas, but lacking the great story and enemy variety of the first so you use the same tactics the entire game, where in T:DP you had to mix it up, depending on what you were up against.

awesome just love it...
i play thief 1 and 2 bank in the day and i just love it... still to this day... it runs fin and its still one of the best games....

Better than the first?
Longer, sneakier, arguably a better story and atmosphere. There's some confusion on the support forums as to the best way to patch up this game (GOG has made it work, but left the vanilla game intact - there are fanmade texture/sound packs that are generally better). Tafferpatcher is the end all for enhancing Thief 2, just make sure you find the cd prompt line in a file to remove. When's Deadly Shadows coming GOG??

This is it!
Modern game developers should be required to play Thief I and II before creating new games. Thief is a very intuitive and immersive game from the first person perspective. No other game that I have ever played has offered such a natural sense of movement through the game environment that actually made you feel as though were actually there! Its dark, its big, its confusing, its spooky and the environments are inventive. The game is almost void of HUDS, on screen maps, player avatars, player names, pop-up text etc. The game can be very 3 dimensional with you scaling a wall or a pile of crates etc. which works well with a sandbox game but would be somewhat contrived with a linear game. This isn't a FPS of turning a corner in some industrial complex and shooting 1,000 rounds into yet another horde of zombies, special forces, aliens etc. Instead, you may be in an underground city where you are literally lost for an hour. Interaction with people, objects and doors is intuitive, relevant and realistic. It is a huge 'sandbox game' that is completely non linear with several objectives. Ambient sounds along with dialogue from odd parties and your own character are very immersing. There is a ton of dialogue that is going on that you overhear just from walking by. It feels like you're there, it sounds like you're there and you move, walk, run and climb naturally.
