Best Plough This Side of the Pontar!
If you don't know how good The Witcher series is by now, I'd advise you to crawl back into whatever cave you've been living in the last 20 or so years. While the first game was a PC only release and despite the fine graphics and voicework for its time, the first game lacked a compelling combat system so the games really didn't hit their stride until the second title made the right adjustments and polished up everything into the mirror sheen of a AAA Masterpiece despite its inception from a then fledgeling CDProjectRed. And while the 2nd outing lacks the impressive Rockstar or Bethesda standard open world of the 3rd game, this title has level and world design more reminiscent of Dark Souls in which you are free to move about in large open ended sandboxes you are usually confined to one place while you play out the events chapter to chapter. It works well in part to the narrative design of the game and heavy story beats. While Dark Souls is entirely driven by environmental storytelling and inventory text splashes, The Witcher, being based on a best selling Polish book series, is obviously character driven and full of tales of swords, sorcery and political intrigue. Of course, it would be recommended to pkay through the first game for the throughline of the story as you'll meet manyfaces throughout the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, titles, but it is entirely possible to enjoy the narrative of each on their own merits without having played the previous ones. I recommend any fan of modern RPG's, especially western ones, give each game in the Witcher series a fair shake, but thanks to the relatively low system demands of the first and second titles, and the fact that GoG probably has them on sale for less than a bad cup of franchised coffee, recommending these games becomes a no brainer... Even when your pockets hang heavy with the weight of Drowner brains and not orens. ;)
