WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THE POWER?

Jump straight into managing your own planets as you guide a civilization through the ages. Become the ultimate empire in The Universim, a new breed of God Game in development by Crytivo.

WANNA BE A GOD?

Your time is coming. Guide a fledgling civilization through the obstacles of life. From humble beginnings, watch as they evolve and advance throughout the ages under your wing. Influence their decisions and punish the unfaithful with a wide range of godly abilities. Interact with objects, create disasters, and launch clueless creatures into orbit. This is your world, and nothing can stop you from having fun.

Our goal is to bring back the features you know and love from classic god games and spice them up with fresh ideas, a modern physics engine, and stylized visuals developed by a few of our very own industry heroes.

THE STORY OF A SPECIES

Meet the Nuggets, a fragile and whacky species that relies on your leadership to build, research, and advance. Help them, and they will soon begin writing their own history in the stars. Every Nugget is a unique individual with a distinct set of characteristics. Just like any other living creature, Nuggets must have access to a few vital resources in order to survive. This includes water to drink, food to eat, and recreational activities to increase their happiness and quality of life. Recreational activities may include blowing stuff up. You’ve been warned. As you spend time with the Nuggets, You will see that they behave like natural, living beings. They have their own thoughts and needs - and they even have the ability to make their own decisions at times. We want to give you a feeling that you’re interacting with a living organism, almost like you’re messing around with a rather chaotic ant farm.

ORGANIC GAMEPLAY

Planets in The Universim aren’t just made up of a bunch of neatly-arranged objects; everything is linked together and plays a unique role in each planet’s ecosystem. Every tree your civilization cuts down, every resource they mine and every animal they hunt will affect the world they’re living in. A lack of trees and high levels of pollution will raise the global temperature over time, while reckless hunting or fishing might cause the extinction of some species. It’s your mission to manage how the Nuggets collect and utilize resources. What mark will you leave on the ecosystems that existed millions of years before your arrival? Will you use every available resource and expand at an unprecedented pace, or will you methodically create a more sustainable way of life for your civilization? These are living, breathing worlds where everything is interconnected. We aim to provide you with an unique experience unlike any of the god games you have played before. Every decision you or your civilization makes will have consequences.

NATURE AS YOU KNOW IT

In The Universim, nature is just as wonderful and unpredictable as ever. Every planet comes with a few surprises that are sure to challenge your civilization. From tornadoes that consume everything in their path, to thunderous earthquakes that threaten to split your civilization in two. If you treat nature poorly, it might just show you how brutal and unforgiving it can be. Each planet you encounter will have a unique underbelly. Some planets are tranquil and filled to the brim with resources, while others are barren and dangerous. Be careful out there! Something as simple as the cycle between night and day can play an important role. Wild animal attacks are more common at night, as are frequent temperature drops. Daytime offers a little more safety from the harshness of the world. With the inclusion of a full, four-season cycle, a planet’s biomes can change drastically, making it extremely difficult for Nuggets to survive brutal winters without proper preparation ahead of time.

Interesting idea, but requires more work

I was quite hyped for this game, but alas, I can't say it met my expectations (it may be the problem of my biased perception though). It's quite polished in comparison with most Early Access games these days, it has adorable graphical style, the narrator is voiced nicely, yet the main problem is that it's just not very fun to play. It's one of the very few games that managed to confuse me with what should I be doing. See, The Universim positions itself as a god game, and even in the game's intro you're told several times how the job of the creator is observation with minimal influence when necessary, however, it's all thrown away the moment the intro ends and you have to manually order construction of buildings, directly influence your units, decide what they research, etc. What it lacks is any kind of challenge that makes the RTS/base building genre fun. In other similar games there are opponents you have to compete with (Black & White, or Spore on its Tribe and Civilization stages), or natural/environmental threats (Banished, Frostpunk) to keep the players on their toes. The Universim has none of that, so I personally did not have any kind of motivation to develop my civilization, nor did I feel attached to it. The tutorials were also rather lackluster and currently there's a bug that makes them unreadable which doesn't make things easier on the player. There's also lack of feedback on what do buildings actually do - for example, I still cannot understand what's the difference between a well, a water pump, and water storage, because the purpose of all three is to provide water, yet I had all three and the counter of stored water stayed at zero. Overall I think The Universim could grow into a fun game, but the developers need to figure out what exactly do they want it to become. If you're interested, the best option would be to give it a try and see for yourself - perhaps some of the problems I've listed here will get addressed in time. Perhaps.

A Nugget that needs some polish.

First, very much an early access game at this point (Aug 29) The interface is polished and the mechanics of how to do things work pretty well. I am enjoying exploring the research tree and building my first civilization but at this point (I am about 2-3 hours in as of writing this) the game is more of a peaceful sandbox than anything else. There is not a lot of game here yet, however from reading the news link from the main menu it looks like they have a huge amount of story planned, with goals and tasks in mind. They are still working on the second half of the research tree and the later parts of the game mechanics however, and so do not want to put out just half the story. In other words, mostly what is here right now is just the framework and the engine for it... I am absolutely fine with that. it is an in dev game after all. There are many tooltips that are incomplete, and some places where it is apparent that names should be inserted into the little quest/mission dialogues but are currently just blanks or placeholder values (#nugget_name_1) etc.. But the bits of tutorial that are in and the notifications/small missions that exist are quite clever and have a nice sense of humor in my opinion. For those looking for a ready to play game, I would say add it to your wishlist and check back in a few months, it looks like it is going to be a great god game. If you enjoy a very relaxed sandbox, grab it now and enjoy watching it grow and evolve into something with a bit of challenge included.

Too bad for this stage in beta

This game's Kickstarter campaign started in April 2014. The game should have been finished by now. The problem is that this developer starts a lot of games and slows development when enough copies are sold. The engineer offices can be upgraded before getting the university. Upgraded engineer offices need educated (academic) characters to run. Universities can be unlocked long after this upgrade. It's only one example but there are many of them. Engineers are Nuggets that repair building. Without them, you'll need to repair everything with your powers. Players compained about the absence of challenge. Now, if you blink twice, your city can be burning. There is no balance. As other players mentioned, you are supposed to be a God but you have to tell your people everything they have to do. The only buildings they'll build on their own are their houses and they won't do anything if you refuse to help them build houses when you try to build another building. After 6 years, a 0.40 isn't enough. Does that really mean that the game is only 40% complete? If so, then you should definitely avoid this game even if you can get it for less than 10$. The game would have been worth full price if (and only if) there was balance (ennemies + no natural disasters unless you decide it + colonization).

Because it's still in EA 3 stars

Don't buy this game, as long as it's in EA. It's fun within it's first hour but thereafter it becomes unbearable. 1. It starts lagging at around 250-300 Nuggets. And when I say lagging I mean like hell. 2. Micromanagement. Alt the beginning you may not think to much about it, but as soon as your civilization expands and you get further up the tech tree it becomes a pain in the ass. I can't understand who thought this to be a good idea. 3. Repetition. Because of the horrible micromanagement you get stuck in an endless loop of opening the same little windows again and again without progress. all you do is to assign nugget X to job Y and then click the next building rince and repeat. You can't enjoy the beauty of this game because all you do is staring at small windows to keep up productivity. You are a god but your nuggets can't get shit done if you don'T tell them exactly what to do. Imagine god had to tell you how to use the toilette. That's what you are in this game. Terrible! 4. God Powers. They are just lame. Boring at the beginning of the game and then useless really soon (before you even arrive mid game they are worthless). This all sounds horrible and it kinda is. But there are also some nice pieces. Therefore three stars since it's in early access. If they don't improve this stupid micromanagement aspect and the god powers until release I will change this to 1 star only. I still hope to see a good god simulator in the end. By now it's only a very bad city builder.

Great potential, but...

The game has a wonderful potential (and he coolest trailer I have seen in ages) but why does the buildings have to take up such a huge space compared to their actual size? I also miss an abillity to create a small tribe and keep it that way, to avoid having a huge part of the planet eaten away by a sprawling village. And the god powers seem...paltry. The graphics are awesome, of course, but currently this game is more CitybuilderLite than a new Populous. I'd hold off buying it, unless it is on a substantial sale. Three stars, one for the awesome trailer (why isn't the game more like it, with focus on a family of nuggets or a few nuggets? Ah well...)
