Bioware basically started their own subgenre of RPG with Mass Effect - 3rd person action RPG with an epic, mature story and well written characters that you can romance. They eventually went the way of dodo, courtesy of Electronic Arts, but others try to carry their torch. I think Spiders are among the best of those. Technomancer is the kind of a game I would recommend to anyone who'd ask: "I've just finished the Mass Effect trilogy, are there games somewhat similar to that?" I already kindda liked Mars: War Logs, it was a likeable little indie RPG but Technomancer is on a whole new level. A tenfold increase of budget and ambition. And it all mostly pays off. After finishing it I'm tempted to say "give Spiders two more games and they'll be better than Bioware ever was."
A serviceable game in every respect that skims the surface of mediocrity but rises above in ways that are often hard to describe. This is more or less an alternate dimension early 2000s Bioware game with better combat but worse storytelling; a bare bones but nevertheless substantial enough offering to draw you in. Expect solid combat with mostly gratifying progression and three combat styles to specialize in, companions and romances, fully voiced dialogue with some familiar cast members (which I think is pretty cool), quests, skill trees, attribute and talent points, zone exploring, basic crafting/upgrading, and gear progression. I personally think their UI is onto something as well. It's a bit clumsy, but the inventory screen has a unique and cool presentation that I'd like to see other games iterate on. Most of the assets have been ripped from an earlier game, which is disappointing because you'd expect they'd have designed more in the interim. The visuals are mostly dependent on a single kit and rub me the wrong way. I'm not sure how to describe why, but the cities still have cool things to see, even if most of them are out of reach.
I think this game is solidly average. It's endearing enough to qualify as an uncut gem and presents enough substance (30-40 hours a play through) for fans of the genre to find things to like, even if their imagination will have some gaps to fill. Spiders studio has cultivated a reputation of always being rough around the edges and failing to learn from and anticipate what should be simple mistakes to correct. Despite this, most people who play Technomancer will end up rooting for them and looking forward to future titles, myself included. If you see this game on sale (should only be 7 bucks or so) it's a really easy buy, but it's definitely worth the twenty dollar asking price as well. I think games like these should be celebrated. They're part of a studios journey and they'd love to have you along for the ride.
I got this game without knowing what to expect. It turned out to be a great game: the lore, the world, character development, companions and the choices&consequences were all very intriguing. Really impressed with the companions, their stories and dialogues, I liked them all in different ways and I really felt like we were a close knit bunch, I'll miss them. It's polished and has a lot of substance for the price and i wish more people knew about this game, highly recommended!
The Technomancer is a beautiful action RPG with a classic design philosophy. If you miss the old days of classic BioWare, and wish there could be another developer who put that much passion into their RPGs, this is the game for you.
If you just like RPGs with interesting settings and good storytelling in general, and you want a game that offers vast amounts of content for a modest price, this is the game for you.
This is AAA quality from a lesser-known developer, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them and their games.
The progress is absolutely visible between Technomancer and Mars: War Logs. However, the said progress only relates to the narrative and amount of locations. The core gameplay remains the same, with painful and annoying combat experience. Even if easily exploited (mine spam), the long story recycling the same locations with multiple respawning enemies (you will have the same encounters in exact same rooms over and over again when doing different quests), makes it barely tolerable and I had been on a verge of dropping the game altogether. The gameplay does not evolve anywhere from a midway of the second Act. On Extreme difficulty I didn't change any equipment piece or used any new skill. It boils down to a handful set pieces of combat encounters repeated throughout the whole game with different cut scenes and dialogues inbetween.
The rocky and sometimes tiring journey, however, is worth for the ending alone, where the best element of the franchise peaks. The world building and a narrative broad perspective makes the Technomancer's world appealing and worth the hassle. If the developer decides to pull this franchise further down the road, they have a strong base for it. Some better writers would be recommended, though. The main quests more often than not felt like a drag and a filler, and the companions and their relations are blandly executed, even if the ideas behind them are good.
A guilty pleasure with potential for something much better.
