*phew* Another good port from DotEmu :)

I bought 4 SNK games when they came out this week - KOF2002, Twinkle Star Sprites, Shock Troopers and this. KOF2002 is a terrible port. Last Blade, and all the others, are good, so I just want people to know that now. Its not just lazy emulation; this here is a great game loaded with all the options you want and could reasonably expect for a classic game. Fullscreen/Windowed, Aspect Ratio, Resolutions, key rebindings, sound stuff, etc. As well as a proper front-end and menus and an assortment of modes This is quality stuff. I'm actually relieved, lol. KOF'02 is just so... not. What a bizarre standout. I was really worried there, and heck, with 15 or so Neo Geo games dropping at the same time, there's probably some other bad ports mixed in with the good. But I just wanted to get a review out there to let people know this is one of the good ones. Purchase away! As for the game itself, I've barely scratched the surface today. I'm not super familiar with Last Blade yet. Or any Samurai Shodown for that matter. As far as SNK goes, I'm more of a Fatal Fury/King of Fighters guy - heck, I'll even talk about Kizuna Encounter ALL DAY LONG :P But for some reason I just never dove into their weapons-based fighters. I know this is quality though, and I'm looking forward to diving in NOW. I'm just happy to report this is a good version. Hope to see more SNK goodness in the future on GOG, but more importantly, I hope DotEmu gets their stuff sorted out. THIS kind of release is the right way to do it, and I'm happy to support it. They should just, absolutely, be consistent with their releases. KOF2002's GOG version is just inexplicable. Last Blade though? That's good to go, y'all.

This is actually a good port

Excellent port of an excellent game. Can't praise The last blade enough, the gameplay is what any weapons based fighting game should seek to emulate. Speaking of emulation this port is actually very good with clean audio and no dropped frames and an actual interface, unlike the samurai shodown V port.

The arcade experience back to life!

Just played my way through the story mode and it was pretty much the arcade experience, but enhanced with beautiful screens with options for home gaming! The controls felt great, the game itself was an underrated fighting game with interesting characters. My only gripe is they took maybe too literally the "credits" part, and it's a tad unbalanced, but it also makes it worth the effort to live up to the challenge!

Jesus Herbert Walker Christ, buy this.

If you don't own The Last Blade... you can go to hell. Look, that might seem a little dramatic, but I only say it because I care. SNK is responsible for 11 of the 10 best 2D fighting games of all time, and The Last Blade 1 and 2 are right at the top of the list. They don't take up the 1st and 2nd spot, nor are they tied for number 1. They simultaneously occupy the same space at the same time at the top of the heap. Don't worry if that doesn't make sense, just trust me. It's science. This series is a bit slower paced than most games in this genre, but the depth of the gameplay is unmatched. There is an interesting cast of characters to chose from with a wide variety of weapons and fighting styles. You then pick between two styles, "Speed" for faster more offensive play and longer combos, and "Power" for more defensive play with slower moves that do greater damage. Either way playing defensively will generally get you farther here, reading your opponent and waiting for an opening. Music is minimal with most battles scored with ambient nature sounds, but what few tracks are present are quite good. All of this taking place in some of the most beautifully animated backgrounds to ever grace a 16 bit game. Seriously though, you have no excuse. GoG and Humble Store have this game with no DRM, but if that is just too much freedom for you to handle, you can get it on almost any other distribution platform or console. And if you're a purist who really wants to part with some cash, you can throw down a couple hundred for the MVS cart. Either way, please add The Last Blade to your game library. This, the second one, or both. I mean really, what else are you doing with your life?

Not the best way to play The Last Blade

It's a real shame but I just cannot recommend this version of The Last Blade. The speed is inconsistent and has stuttering. In other types of games this would be excusible but in a fighting game it pretty much 100% breaks the game. As for the game itself, I love The Last Blade. I probably prefer it over the sequel but this game sadly does not run well via GOG / DotEmu. For the record I did try forcing v-sync, playing in windowed mode etc but it always ran exactly the same. This game will just be standing there is my collection looking broken (please let Code Mystics fix it!!)/
