The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY Edition

If you are looking the most stable and most complete version of Morrowind, you found it! You get the main game, Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions, 8 official plugins, and an Official Strategy guide (415 pages)! Only GOG bundles the official plugins with the GotY Edition! (Official plugins released by Bethesda exclusively for the PC version of Morrowind.) They are turned off by default on the GOG version and must be toggled on in the launcher's Data Files menu. I played morroind with the first GOTY edition. It was unbelievable. I sank hours long in the game. WHen I think about my best gaming memories, they go to morrowind, exploring this huge world, these incredible dungeons. FOr me, Oblivion and skyrim never surpassed the impression of freedom morrowinf gave me. This being said, I'm not sure it would be possible to enjoy it so much nowadays. The gameplay is horrible, the graphics have grown old. I am thankfull to have been able to play this game at the time it was the best you could imagine. Because right now, I think that if you comme from skyrim, you can only be disapointed. Unles you like oldies, and hate what gaming looks like now. I, for sure, wouldn't be able to finish bloodmoon (a thing that I never did despite the thousands of hours I spent playing). This game will always have a peculiar place in my hearth, but I don't thing it's possible to say that it is an experience everyone should have today

Step 1 - Ignore Oblivion and Skyrim. These games might look similar, but Morrowind comes from the world of pen & paper, dice roll style old school RPGs. Emphasis on game mechanics, not "action". Don't try to compare, take it as is. Step 2 - Don't stress character creation. Choose whatever you like and experiment. Eventually you can offset "bad choices" and specialize however you want. Don't waste time rerolling for that "perfect character" over and over again, you'll ruin your fun. Step 3 - Chill out & Immerse yourself. Don't chase quest lines. Go explore, try out different things, travel to different cities and villages, talk to NPCs,. Let yourself be distracted & invest your time into whatever interests YOU. Step 4 - Consider it a sandbox. The game is not a linear experience. Use your imagination, combine playstyles, create new spells or enchantments, occupy a house and decorate it with loot... Set your own goals. Step 5 - Enjoy.

If you go into this now 20 year old game expecting it to be exactly like Skyrim or Oblivion, you're just dumb. Most of these negative reviews are from people who can't pull themselves out of their modern perspective. It's an old game. It has flaws for sure, but it's meant to be as pure of an RPG as possible. The dice roll combat is no different than your average cRPG like Divinity or Baldur's Gate and no one complains there, but because it's TES and later games dropped the dice roll combat, NOW it's a problem retroactively. That's how tabletop RPG's work and that's why it's here. If you're playing these games for deep satisfying combat, you're making a big mistake. TES has NEVER had great combat. That's not the point. It's meant to be as much of a freeform RPG as possible where you have combat, exploration, questing, stealth, alchemy, etc. Not all of these systems will be the most in-depth, but they don't have to to deliver an endlessly replayable experience. People hate how the narrative is never prioritized, again, missing the point. This is meant to be a free roam game. Even when you finish the main quest, the game continues and the world changes. It's an immersive adventure that ends when you want it to end. To explain it to the haters, this game is loved for the incredibly, detailed, immersive, and atmospheric world that few games can match even now. The lore is brilliant and features some of the most complex writing ever from Bethesda. The world in no way revolves around you. You're just a stranger in a strange land. People are so used to being treated as badass heroes without earning it. You gotta earn your reputation here. The game doesn't baby you. You feel the progression and it's rewarding and immensely satisfying. Also, if you can't hit anything, you just suck at the game. Read the manual and learn fatigue management. This game destroys Skyrim. It's people who never played old school D&D that hate it honestly. It's not bad. It's just not for you.
