System Shock: Enhanced Edition also includes the classic 32-bit version of the game.
You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to Diego, a greedy Trioptium exec who bankrolls a rare cyberjack implant operation. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you.
Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel now teems with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless A.I. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror...
Exactly twenty one years after its first release, System Shock is back!
The Enhanced Edition adds a modern touch to this true classic gem, without taking anything from its unmistakable atmosphere.
See for yourself that the game that has been called the benchmark for intelligent first-person gaming, has lost nothing of its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.
System Shock: Enhanced Edition features:
- Higher resolution support: up to 1024x768, and 854x480 widescreen mode.
- Mouselook support added.
- Remappable keys with three profiles to choose from: original controls, custom controls, and lefthanded controls.
- Some original game bugs fixed.
Rocket through cyberspace to steal information, hack security and grapple with watchdog defense programs enslaved to a maniacal computer.
Survive battle after battle against armies of killer cyborgs and deadly robots as you collect hardware attachments, life-sustaining patches and deadly weapons to combat mindless mutants.
Test your intelligence by solving puzzles, rewiring access panels and outwitting SHODAN in its own cyber-realm.
Enjoy the vastly improved controls and graphics of the Enhanced Edition - or keep your experience as close to the original as possible with the Classic version.
I'll spare you describing the game since it's a cult classic with so many reviews and stick to a few very specific details. The game was incredible in 1994 and is decent today. Without any nostalgia (since I didn't play until 2020), I can tell you this game holds up today, as long as you have a medium tolerance for "what the hell am I supposed to do?" and initially clunky controls.
This version can run in higher resolutions such as, 1920x1080, this is great because you can alt-tab really fast in and out of the game, I really liked this.
Persistent mouselook lets you toggle between the mode where [your mouse moves your cursor] and the mode where [your mouse moves the camera]. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this was added in the Enhanced Edition - it's a godsend, as it makes the game much less annoying to control. In particular, cyberspace is borderline impossible to control if you're not in mouselook mode.
The only major downside to the game (perhaps specific to this Enhanced Edition) are the ridiculous respawns, which is half the reason I'm giving it 4 stars. I'm not against respawning and I'm not being overly sensitive here, this is something that happened to me:
I was in Corridor A and opened a door into Corridor B. Corridor B had two enemies, and I started shooting at them. While killing them, 2 enemies spawned behind me in Corridor A, in such a way that they could immediately start firing on me. Before I could finish dealing with them, 2 more enemies spawned in Corridor B. So essentially, 4 enemies spawned very close to me in a very frustrating and immersion-breaking manner.
The game constantly respawns enemies in areas it defines as corridors as long as you're not in said corridors. This is somewhat frustrating but it's part of the game - it makes you plan and minimize your travel. But sometimes it just goes into overdrive and becomes rather ridiculous.
System Shock is an older game that has aged like a fine game.
The gameplay has features, that might take some time to get used to, but after a while it feels almost natural, like you're having a dream of playing a game: it feels odd, but familiar, and you have to focus really hard or everything falls apart. It gets easier little by little, but playing System Shock still feels a bit off, like the character you're playing as (the Hacker) is a bit drunk (although he has just woken up from a 6 month long healing coma and has had nothing to drink or eat after that, so maybe he's just tired).
The writing is good, sometimes great. I liked the story, it was rather simple and linear, but well constructed and the pacing was good. Voice acting ranged from intern-level to god-like.
Shodan is propably the best sci-fi villain in any human media. Shodan is always up to something and is not shy about it. Shodan hates you and wants you to know it. I need that Shodan energy more in my life. What a great character and a great adversary.
Citadel station is full of interesting details and cool design. It feels like a very functional place. Voice messages, notes and environmental clues makes it feel lived in.
The grapichs are a bit rough sometimes, but that shouldn't be a problem, if you have a working imagination. Some thing are nastier when they exist mostly in your mind.
Cyberspace had some cool music (as well as the rest of the game), but I felt like it was the least enjoyable part of the game.
The ending was quite abrupt, but I guess it made sense storywise. Now I'm just sad the game is over.
I've been having dreams about this game lately, so it propably won't let me go. I'm an insect caught in Shodan's web. I'm not sure, if I want to escape.
Right off the bat, I will get this out of the way - I enjoy this game. A hell of a lot. I've played through and beaten this very game once before, about a couple of years back, and it held my attention the whole way through, but... there are still issues which many may not like.
For its time, the graphics are impressive - 2D sprites of the enemies you face in an actual 3D environment with room-over-room, in a manner, a true successor to Ultima Underworld as opposed to the orthagonal-only maps of Wolf3D and the improved, but still ultimately two-and-a-half dimensional maps of Doom. Level textures are simplistic but also detailed enough, to the point of telling the story of Citadel Station even just through the visuals. Cyberspace sections are even more simplistic, eschewing textures for simple wireframe polygons and abstract, but still recognizable, hazards.
Sounds are absolutely vital - although rather 'low fidelity' for today, enemies of all kinds can easily be heard before they're seen, letting you know what to expect - a simple security cyborg, a floating Zero-G mutant, or the dreaded Cortex Reaver. Music is randomized in a manner very reminiscent of LucasArts' later iMuse system, and each floor adds a different feel to the music, as well.
The difficulty settings give a good amount of replay to the game as well as determining the score you end with, as if you need 'score' for a game like this. Four options of difficulty allow you to choose how aggressive enemies are, how much of the plot of the game you can, or are even forced to, experience, how difficult Cyberspace is, and even how easy or difficult the various circuit puzzles are you'll find amongst the ruins of Citadel.
However, the game wears its age on its sleeve - the control scheme is unlike any other you may have experienced, and even the mouselook of Enhanced isn't perfect. This is NOT a game for everyone, but if you're willing to learn, prepare for a riveting good time.
