Buy Terraria Instead

I was excited when I first gave money to the team to develop Starbound. It was everything I was looking for in a game. Sadly, it doesn't seem to make any progress. They used to have a clear roadmap, but it's become micro fixes and random elements thrown in while ignoring the important content. This could be a great game, but right now, it's only mildly entertaining for a short time. The devs need to sit down, solidify what they want as a core part of their game, and work on that. As it stands, it seems every whim and idea gets thrown in, tested, and then they decide whether they want it or not. Terraria is a complete game with a ton of content. Definitely keep your eye on Starbound and check back every 6 months or so. Someday this could be a great game.

Just don't.

Just make yourself a favor and don't buy this game. At first glance it looks fine, but as you progress there are many unpolished things which very propably comes from abuse of people working on it. Unpaid labor? No wonder about a quality. And don't get me started about game optimalisation... Unless you got some 7ghz processor powerhouse you are out of luck and locked at 10-20 fps at the times. Trying to mod this game? Good luck. Biggest mod out there is FU and creator is made from same clay as chucklefish ceo's. Just take a glance at his responses on tt, steam or chuckefish forums. Also stealing others work is no issue for him. Even saing "sorry" seems impossible to him. Anyway - don't waste your time and don't waste your money. Peace!

Severly handicapped by bad controls

The title says it all, really. This type of game doesn't lend itself well to the mouse and keyboard, but Starbound also doesn't support controllers so players end up being stuck using the mouse and keyboard. I say this as someone who has been using the mouse and keyboard for decades to play games, too. Jumping and moving doesn't feel great and ends up being frustrating, especially when doing both at the same time. Fighting sucks because if you accidentally have the mouse cursor pointing the wrong direction your character will attack in the wrong direction. Having to fight, move, and jump at the same time is test of patience, it doesn't work well at all. Honestly I'm sure the game has plenty to it, but I can't tolerate the bad controls, so I can't get into it enough to see. People keep comparing this to Terraria, but it is nothing like it. For starters Terraria has usable controls and controller support, which makes all the difference. I don't recommend it for this reason.

A promise too long unkept to trust.

There's a lot of history to Starbound that isn't obvious from a cursory glance of this title's description. This game has been around a lot longer than some people on Steam believe are privy to. In fact, this game has been in development as early as 2013 for as long as I have been involved (some say even as far as 2011), back when the devs made enormous money (if I remember correctly, millions) via pre-purchase. My personal recollection of the game in alpha was a lot of fun, especially with the added hype of believing that the real game, the expansive and detailed world we were promised would be at it's 1.0 stage now going 2-3 years ago. Lots of people are going to tell you that Starbound has been in development for a really long time, and some will also tell you that supporting a game in alpha is an investment. That you need to be patient, allow developers to work, and remember that your purchase is just going toward making a better game come out faster. But I want to warn you, I've seen this title's progress pinball all over the place for years, and I've seen a lot of simple mistakes pile up on the developer's end long enough for me to believe that this game will be nothing more than a partially-realized concept for years at least, if not forever. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up vaporware if it isn't that already. Which is why I'm advising that you should ignore the advocation that this game is in development, and that you should make your purchase as if it were in it's finished state as of this very moment. It's empty, and the only real end state is a kind of vacuous boredom, but it's kind of fun for the initial ride. Just don't expect any expectations you have to be fulfilled.
