STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

The appearance of Star Wars: X-Wing on GOG.com gives me goosebumps of nostalgia just thinking about the hours upon hours spent dodging TIE-Fighters and completing missions. Whilst there are many games nowadays that offer better graphics, open-space gameplay and multiplayer, X-Wing trumps all of them in terms of mission design and atmosphere. You incarnate a pilot for the Rebel Alliance, at war with the Imperial Forces. In the course of your career you will fly the name-giving X-Wing fighter, as well as Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing and Shuttles/Gunboats in a variety of missions against the Imperial Navy. You can also test your mettle flying obstacle courses during Pilot Training, and Historical Missions from the Star Wars universe. Whilst far away from a true 'simulation', X-Wing is no arcade game either and you will still need to learn to manage your powergrid, shields and weapons to be successful in your career. Did you enjoy the old Wing Commander games? X-Wing is for you. If you are looking for an open-world experience, look elsewhere (Try Elite). If you are looking for trading or commerce, look elsewhere (Again, Elite, or perhaps the X-Series, Freelancer). X-Wing is about career, guts and glory of the Rebel Alliance.

I spent many hours playing this back in the day. It is the very first game I bought for PC. It doesn't coddle a player the way many modern games do. Personally, I wonder why it hasn't been remade, but the original holds up surprisingly well, at least the gameplay does. Buy it. Buy it now.

X-Wing (and TIE Fighter) are two of the best Star Wars games ever made. They are the first games I had for my PC and I still recommend them. Way to go GoG for getting these titles. Any chance for Dark Forces? :)

No, this does not include the Collector's CD-ROM, no It's not the definitive version of the game but that, by no means, means its a bad game. X-Wing, no matter which you download (the 1998 or 1993 releases, both of which are included) you'll have a great time blowing TIEs out of space. I've been playing the '98 version, to my surprise. And the feeling of playing X-wing remains; that classic sensation of dogfighting imperials over star destroyers or in open space. Plus the graphics aren't as drastically off-putting. Either way, '93 or '98 you'll have a great time. As a huge Star Wars fanatic, this is the pinnacle space simulator, along with TIE Fighter, and a must have despite its not being the "definitive" version.
