WARNING: Game requires joystick

Warning: this game requires joystick. You will NOT be able to play without one. Though considering Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous you either already have it or at a very least: should be planning to get one. Quick review: SW: X-wing Alliance is one of the best space combat games to date. Great storyline (53 campaign missions!), tons of amazing fun flying legendary fighters and freighters (27 in total!), and combat... this game probably has the second-best arcade space combat, right after the Freespace 2. Truly an excellent game. I also recommend X-Wing Alliance Upgrade website (google is your friend) for tons of "upgrades" to the ship, such as higher details and additional destroyable hardpoints on a cap ships.

Last in a series of glorious space sims!

X-Wing Alliance - Oh me, oh my. This is a top notch space sim, and one that in my youth I played a LOT. I was never fortunate enough to have played the original X-Wing, or Tie Fighter, or even X-Wing VS Tie Fighter, though I've heard nothing but praise, but this one here? The last one they made before the X-Wing series sort of disappeared? This was the game I brought a flightstick especially to play. Mostly because you couldn't play it without a flightstick... I tried and the game itself slapped me upside the head and refused to even load up without a flightstick. Starting from just after the Battle of Hoth, you start this game, not as an ace Rebel pilot, or even a dreaded Imperial pilot, but as the youngest son of a family of civilians just trying to get by, maybe offering a little support to the rebels on the side, as you do. Of course, evens in the game eventually force your hand, and naturally an alliance with the Rebels is made, but it felt very natural to me. Won't give anything more away... other than that this game's climax, which is revealed on the box art so it's not much of a spoiler, is that the finale involves the Battle of Endor. That's right, you get to take part in that finale, epic space battle and even, as an added bonus, get to try your hand and traversing the bowels of the second Death Star. Are you the next Wedge Antiles? Or Lando? Or are you one of those nameless mooks who died before you got to reach the core? Naturally, I was such an ace pilot that I reached the core and escaped, cementing my name in the halls of fame... actually I slowed down too much to make a turn and was rammed into from behind. Sad thing was... I don't think it was a Tie pilot that rammed into me, I think it was one of the other X-Wing pilots. -_- Well, that's my humorous story of the past. I do, HEARTILY, recommend you grab this game. I still have the physical copy of the game and won't let it go, that's how much I think of this epic space simulator. BUY IT NOW!

Try TIE Fighter Total Conversion in XWA

X-Wing Alliance is the second best Star Wars game in the galaxy. Modded with the excellent X-Wing Alliance Upgrade mod package, the game looks stunning even today. The best Star Wars game is of course TIE Fighter, now and forever. TIE Fighter Total Conversion is a free mod that completely reimagines all the missions from the original TIE to the X-Wing Alliance engine, complemented with the aforementioned XWAU. The mod was released 2th of July 2021 and is now available to everyone. It's stunning work and a joy to play. Awesome game.

Ahhhh. The memories. First of all, this is a real Windows game, and it has no problems scaling up to higher resolutions (I remember playing this at 1600x1200 no problems). I am not sure how this will handle wide-screen monitors, but at least you are not stuck at 640x480. This has an excellent single-player story line and a great variety of missions. This is the best of the Star Wars flight sims, and one of the best games in the genre. You get to fly Corellian freighters (including, eventually, the Millennium Falcon), X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, and the Z-95. You even get to fly WITH Luke Skywalker on a mission. Buy it now!

Not the experience I was expecting

Please excuse me for a moment, I'm going to get a little personal. I never had a family that supported me growing up; I was bullied at school and at home and love was not a concept I understood. I had a difficult life and I retreated into computer games and books to escape the world. I picked up this game figuring it would be a decent sequel to X-wing which I had enjoyed and thus a reasonable distraction for a while. What I did not expect to find was an in-depth story with characters who formed a real family, with bonds that mattered. They affectionately call you, as the youngest Azzameen, "ace" and it's obvious that they want to keep you safe, but also let you spread your wings and help grow the family business. They cared for each other. They cared for -you-. At a time in my life when the idea of being loved by anyone was almost incomprehensible, and to suddenly be immersed in a world where the characters treated each other with love and respect was revolutionary. Was this was families could be like? When the family's fortunes changed and cracks began to form, I felt a genuine wrenching of my emotions. I had come to care for these characters as much as they cared for the character I was playing. The writing had helped me - an isolated and emotionally stunted young person - learn to form bonds and feel like I could be worthy of love. While you might think that this was simply the experience of a broken and traumatised soul, I must give credit to the writers. I've played many other games with families and supposedly representing all the bonds you'd expect... but this one managed to sell it. It made me invest and it made me feel. The characters, the writing, the way the world was written - it moved me in a way countless other games never had. I won't say that X-Wing Alliance saved my life, but it had a profound impact on me. It set me on a path to realising that fundamentally it was my family that was broken, and not my fault. Thank you, LucasArts.
