Solid sequel, unintentionally hilarious
This game is pretty neat for a variety of reasons. It's a strong sequel to Elite Force, but doesn't quite live up to the first game in terms of its overall design. The levels feel small and broken up when compared to the original, but I'd bet it's a result of the overall improved visuals soaking up a lot of memory at the time. The game is seriously gorgeous looking for a Quake III based game. As a Star Trek product, it offers a lot of fan service, especially when Jeffrey Combs shows up. The story doesn't really jive with Star Trek's ethos all that well (it tries, though), but hey, it's a first-person shooter, I really wasn't expecting it to do even as well as it did in that regard. The presentation and the variety in the environments and the alien species you encounter make up for the weakness of the story by making it all feel grounded in Star Trek's familiar, yet surprising universe. The game is funny as heck, even when it isn't trying to be. Being able to jump on Picard's desk while he's trying to work is funny in and of itself, but there are so many moments in this game that are ripe with meme potential, just waiting to be recontextualized. Also, at one point there's an alien wearing goggles, and I'm pretty sure they're Blade's goggles from sIn. Wonderful game, especially if you're a Star Trek fan. Not perfect, but it works its charm effectively, and it frequently made me laugh out loud.
