"Catherine?"
It's a lot of junk horror games out there but SOMA is not one of those. It's borderline a masterpiece actually by, the now, famous Swedish horror studio Frictional Games. So the game begins with this guy who's going for a experimental brain scan after have been through a car-crash. And then suddenly he finds himself at a research & development complex at the bottom of the Atlantic. How? Why? That's for you to figure out 🙂 What I will say however is that the game nails the horror aspect of the game but also is fairly philosophical about different subjects. What is a human? What makes us human? A lot of these neat little things the game probes the player to ponder. It's not Planescape: Torment's "What can change the nature of a man?" level of philosophical but it's good and interesting subject matter nonetheless 🙂 Fantastic horrific atmosphere that nails being trapped on the bottom of the ocean being hunted by mad machine/man hybrids. And also the music is top notch but most notably the sound design in this game is of master-class. At the this time I don't think I've heard a game with such excellent sound design. The soundtrack is by Mikko Tarmia, an excellent Finnish horror composer. If you gonna play one horror game this year then play SOMA
