Amazing classic, Completely forgotten.

If you played any other familiar games that use idtech2 (SoF, Kingpin, W: RTCW, Q2) then you shouldn't forget about SiN. It is pretty much almost same like in any other 90s FPS shooter. There's nothing like you wouldn't enjoy the gameplay or the weapons, story and such, because I enjoyed it as much as I could and I guarantee to you that you will enjoy it like me, you just have to play it and stop believing in what haters say. Characters are interesting, humorous and they never get boring. Traveling around the world to stop a woman (Mother of Nature, she calls herself..) that leads the evil corporation, SinTek, which is manufacturing disgusting substance. I won't tell much about it since that would be spoilers. Except there are some things that I don't like on this, and that's the rough start when you play the game for the first time. You are trying to change your OpenGL from 3dfx to default or any other ones but the game just forces you for the 3dfx. The resolution change will sometimes break and you will end up in the situation when the game will switch from resolution to resolution, over and over again. Your display will be for seconds black and for seconds normal again until it totally goes black and you have to restart (Turn off) your computer. I also experienced the stuttering, but it faded out soon quickly. Even some missing dialogs are replaced with text dialogs, but you can swear there were sound lines already, they are not just there. Some bugs too, but not too much game-breaking. Saving is must-do too since you can end up being wrecked so quickly without realizing it. Damage points are here too, so you can use your pistol to quickly eliminate your threat by headshot, or you can shoot their hands so they will drop their weapon, same goes for you! So overall, it's not bad how it looks like. The game can be enjoyable like any other old FPS games. It just got quickly overshadowed by its competition, Half-Life. Give it a try. This review was from my view.

The good, the bad and the ugly in one

Picked up this old title out of curiosity. A cheesy premise with a mad scientist dressed as a dominatrix trying to turn humanity into a bunch of ugly mutants, with some stolen nuclear warheads thrown into the bargain because why not. Yikes. Still, once you get over the b-movie quality of the story, the game itself is quite fun for a while. I also appreciated the fact you can skip the cutscenes; if you are replaying a level you don't really care about watching it again (what with the now dated graphics...). Gameplay-wise I enjoyed the first half better, plenty of gunfights against thugs, and alternative ways of solving each level, and sometimes your actions in one level can affect the next one, so there is some replay value. However, towards the end the game becomes rather frustrating for a number of reasons: some levels are very dark, to the point all you see is a black screen in certain areas and you can't tell if you are facing a tunnel or a wall. Snipers are annoying as hell, they are often practically invisible in the dark and you have to scan the darkness with your cursor and shoot at anything that makes it turn green, just in case. Movement is also quite iffy and it's hard to move around carefully, or even get up a ladder in a straight line--it felt like gliding on ice rather than walking, regardless of the surface. Last but not least, the game feels confusing and rushed, especially towards the end; at times I wasn't even sure why I'm doing what I'm doing anymore, and some levels were so short they felt incomplete. Eventually, all of it got so tedious I resorted to cheating just to get it over with. Overall, not a bad game, but not one I would want to play over and over.

Acceptable FPS from the heyday

I can remember SiN received a fair bit of coverage in games magazines back when it was released. However it was something that I had skipped over until now. All you need to know is that it's a FPS from the late 90s/early 2000s. This should put it within the same cultural sphere as games like Kingpin and Deus Ex, seeing as they also utilize the Quake 2 engine. The game pretty much plays like Quake 2 with a change of aesthetic. You play as Blade who is aided by your hacker friend, and your purpose within the game is to take down the Sintek corporation. Gameplay is fast, and the levels often have an element of puzzle to them -- get the filtration system working; find key; etc etc. Where it fails is that if lacks the variety and creativity that are in games like Kingpin and Deus Ex. Environments are bland, and are initially set in offices and labs. The voice work and cutscenes do make things interesting, but I found it a chore, for the most part, to play through the levels. I think a game like this could do with less levels (there are around 30), and should have focussed on quality of levels instead. If you're into the Quake 2 era of FPS gaming, this might be something for you as it is certainly borne from that era. However I think it shouldn't be a first choice, as there are better options available from the same cloth.

Terrible update

Why would you remove the 3D audio in this game? It could've been re-implemented in OpenAL like with System Shock 2 or had both DSOAL and A3D-ALchemy in the installation and let a native installation of OpenAL do the rest.

Solid shooter

Its a solid action shooter that speaks to the 15 year old boy within me. I would not call it the best, but it is still rather good. Nice variety of weapons, good audio, visuals are ok for the time. Kinda neat to blow limbs off. Would earn a 4 star if it were not for the jumping puzzle for that one scene. You will know it when it comes.
