One of the Best
Wow, this was one of my favorite games. Such an excellent example of a thinking man's game.

Excellent game, the port, however...
So I'm a huge fan of Colonization. I played it all the time when I was younger! This definitely scratched an itch that I didn't get when playing Civ II--the level of micromanagement was really appealing. Even with four factions, exploring the map and establishing colonies was the best thing ever! So why 4 stars? Well...the game I played as a kid wasn't the MS-DOS version, but a later port released for Windows. This meant more accurate graphics, MUCH more legible text, and a menu bar that had things like stats, victory progress, and the Colonizopedia. It was much easier to navigate (having mouse support) and looked better to boot. Unfortunately, I've had a time and a half trying to find this port, since people are only distributing the DOSBox version. If GOG could release the Windows port, that would be awesome and give Colonization a new level of accessibility to younger gamers. Still, if you don't mind the older graphics then don't let that stop you from getting this! It just doesn't work for me, though.

This Game has Stood the Test of Time
**Sid Meier's Colonization: A Timeless Masterpiece** I've been playing Sid Meier's Colonization since its release in the 1990s, and it remains one of my all-time favorite games. The gameplay is as engaging and addictive as ever, and the strategic depth is unparalleled. The game's pacing is perfect, and the balance between exploration, diplomacy, and warfare is expertly crafted. The soundtrack is another highlight. The MIDI music is iconic and adds a nostalgic charm to the experience. It perfectly captures the spirit of the era and complements the gameplay beautifully. While the graphics may not be state-of-the-art by today's standards, they still hold up remarkably well. The game's art style is timeless, and the visuals are clear and easy to understand. Despite numerous attempts to remake or reimagine Colonization, the original still reigns supreme. The developers nailed the formula, and the game's simplicity and elegance are its greatest strengths. I've lost countless hours to this game over the years, and I still find myself drawn back to it time and time again. There's just something about that "one more turn" mentality that keeps me coming back for more.

Sid Meier's Colonization
If you've ever played The Avalon Hill's Game Company Conquistador board game and wished there was an electronic version. This is it! I'm an active boardgamer with the Central PA Game Club. I've been a longtime fan of Sid Meier. This game captures the feel of being in the boots of explorers and conquistadors without the angst of decimating the native populations of the America's. I play the French and seek co-operation and trade with the various tribes, while battling the tyranny of Spain and England. The main goal of this game is declaring independence from the mother country. I seek this goal and the eradication of those other evil european nasties. I just wish there was a way to invade their homelands. I invite you to spend hours and hours of time investigating the splendor of first contact and trade with the Iroquois, Apache, Sioux, Aztec, and more. I hope you'll find it as wonderful as I have. Cheers, Fritz von Catan

Good old Microprose classic
I still have the floppies and the box of this somewhere. I remember the day I bought it and it's beautiful box, opening the box and looking the blue 3.44 disks, 3 IIRC. One of my all time favourite games, not just turn based strategy games. A game based on the Civilization "engine", which IMO far surpassed its parents. You begin as the head of the colonial forces of your European country of choice (*out of four) and proceed to colonize the new world. Deal with the other powers and the various native American tribes. Bribe, fight, talk, trade, whatever you wish. The final goal of each game is to manage to gather enough populace support, and the economy and military to back it up, and declare independence from the nasty European royalty. When you do the Royalty will not just accept it, but send huge forces to teach you a lesson. You then need to fight, trade, etc till you gain the independence for good. How exactly you do it, it is up to you. Great graphics and music for its time, still good enough, though pixelated obviously, graphics. The music remains top notch. The game in general is IMHO perfect. Get it, I know I will get it again. Oh, if you haven't played a Civilization game (it's possible!), perhaps you have played Gold of the Americas by SSG. I am not saying they are very similar, but if you did and liked it, you are going to love Colonization!
