Commandos with a twist

This is a wonderful game, I absolutely loved the Commandos series of games and this really takes you back. Carefully planning out routes and tactics, followed by the execution of them is extremely satisfying. The maps are gorgeous, the art & design is clean and functional, the characters are well written and acted, really the only complaint I have about the game is that the load times are a bit long. The initial load can take anywhere from 1-3 minutes on a SSD drive, once you're in the map though it's very quick so quick loads are painless. Really that's a minor complaint and I was purposefully being nitpicky. If you're a big fan of games that require you to think, this is the game for you, there's no real need for quick reflexes but there is certainly a learning curve. The first couple of missions will take you an hour or so each, especially if you don't just try to kill everyone and rush through them, but later missions are really meant for multiple sittings, the maps are huge and each one will take you well over 2-3 hours, again depending on your play style and tactics.

Commandos in Japan

Got it for free on a promo event and likely would have never bought it, but now that I have completed all missions I very much look forward to a paid copy of the spinoff Aikos Choice. You know, it's Commandos in a Japanese setting, graphics and system requirements are fine, controls are sometimes fiddly (but the quickload function is working well), and emptying the maps is great fun. I rarely sneak by an enemy, but I understand that going the stealth route is also an enjoyable puzzle for some people. Audio is excellent and Kuma is the cutest thing ever. Look at him, the animation is beyond fantastic, it's cuteness overload. One star deduction for gameplay annoyances for achievement hunters. Goals are not shown until the first map completion unless satisfied by specific actions, e.g. killing four guards with a grenade. But for things to avoid, e.g. moving on loud surfaces, the "can no longer fulfil" icon simply isn't there and can cost you an entire second run of several hours. Sure, one can still look that up beforehand, but in my run of mission 11 where water is to be avoided and instead a bridge needs to be cleared, I lost that achievement to a bug after killing the first four guards, literally a hundred meters away from any body of water. And I only saw that after completion when reviewing the oldest savegame. That's frustrating for no good reason at all, and not even fixable by a longer chain of quicksaves kept (three sometimes isn't enough). Plus, some achievements are mutually exclusive, which can be avoided with a regular savegame if known beforehand. That's basically all I can complain about, the rest is dope. The game is absolutely fun for 30 to 50 hours of gameplay with a reasonable rise in difficulty level. If you liked Commandos back then, you absolutely should play Shadow Tactics as well.

I have been craving for a game like this

Stealth, in all it's glory. Stealth. + The mechanics are great. + The levels big and there's lots of room to play around. + The characters are likable and have great personalities. If you have ever been a fan of Commandos or Desperados and you have not bought this yet you should be ashamed! Only one nitpick in this game. Loading the level for the first time that session can take a minute or so. And this is exactly what they say in the little tooltip. On quicksaves it is a matter of mere seconds and you will become bests friends with your F5 button. Buy it. Support this studio for giving us this gem.

Not as good as it looks

The game was amazing in the first levels, it was so well done with timing and such. Then the end levels came... They were really, really awful. I couldn't bring myself to finish them because it was too inconsistent and too much frustrating to play. One, two end levels made me hate the game.

Near flawless... had me hooked

This was the first game I had bought in a while where I didn't do much research nor read that many reviews, my decision was based purely on the subject matter (Edo period Japan), and the fact that I hadn't played a tactical game in a while, and was feeling a bit soft-headed. Much to my surprise it was actually a throw-back to the old Commandos games, the first of which I played ages ago and absolutely loved. This is a great update to the Commandos style formula - in brief, it's using a small squad with varying and complementary skills to tackle espionage/infiltration style missions. Each mission boils down to a multitude of interlocking puzzles to solve using the unique skills of your squad members, either by incapacitating or avoiding enemies - and the result is incredibly challenging and addictive gameplay. It's a good feeling when you've set up the perfect ambush, considering all enemy patrol routes, accounted for noise and viewing distance... you set it off and appreciate the silence of zero alarms once the dust and blood settles... only to have it shattered by that pesky civilian you ignored who proceeds to ruin about 20 minutes of hard work! Annoying, but still, if you're chasing the satisfaction of executing and reaping the rewards of perfectly laid plans, this game delivers. The only reason I've dropped a star is due to the games' story - it's fairly predictable, there's little character development and it's pretty unengaging. To be honest, I don't think it needs a great story - that's not the point of the game, but it's nice the developers tried to link everything together. Sometimes the controls can feel a bit janky, but compared to Commandos are a dream. Other than that, there's not much to say - shadow tactics is nearly flawless... in short, buy it, and encourage more of this type of game! By the way, if you don't like save scumming, there's a simple solution. Don't do it... but let all of us other mere mortals enjoy saving if and when we wish.
