A Masterpiece That Deserves a Sequel!

I saw this game first on E3 2009. Didn't make so mutch about it, first thought Assassin's Creed VS Grand Theft Auto. And yes, I was right. This game combines two of the best games I have ever played, in a WW2 setting. Sure it has some downs, but what "big" game has not sufferd bugs, and so on. The GoG release has fixed some of the "disturbing" bugs. And yes, I love the hell outa this game again and again. Go buy it, it's so worth it! Make a sequel now EA!

Worth every cent.

If you're reading this and the game is on sale, you must buy it. There's a reason a game from 2009 still sells normally for $20. If you like the Just Cause, Sniper, and Assassin's Creed games and you also like to shoot/blow up/stab/run over Nazis, this is the perfect game you. The soundtrack is pretty good too. Played the heck out of this on Xbox when it first released and it's still in my top 10 list.

WWII with a difference

Pandemic did a great job, every gameplay element is done really well except for the parkour, it's not as fluid as Assassin's Creed. Despite being set during WWII, you do not play as an Allied soldier which was refreshing to see. Paris is beautiful and immersive, makes me wish for more games set in Paris. I love the less serious tone of the game with it's obnoxious accents, crazy missions and advanced weaponry.

Flawed but fun.

Overall, I enjoyed my time playing the Saboteur. You play as an Irishman named Sean Devlin who's out for revenge for reasons I won't spoil for you. Sean has a talent for three things: driving, blowing things up, and killing Nazis. The driving is serviceable, but you won't mistake the driving bits for a proper racing game. Blowing things up is fun, and detonating multiple bombs at once to blow up several pieces of Nazi equipment in one big fireball is quite the show. When it comes to killing Nazis, Sean has plenty of options. You can go stealthy and quiet with a silenced pistol, you can set bombs and blow your unwary foes to smithereens, or you can just go in guns blazing and hope for the best. I tried sticking with the stealth approach most of the time, but, while the game has stealth mechanics, staying inconspicuous is stupendously difficult. It seemed that no matter how cautiously I played, most missions ended with me running for dear life as the whole of the Nazi army chased me...which is still fun in its own way. I did bump into a couple of bugs. There are times when Sean will get stuck on something in the environment (or, sometimes, nothing at all). Sometimes that's harmless, but it gets a bit irritating when you've set a bomb with a fuse and Sean just can't seem to get away for what appears to be no good reason at all. I also encountered a Nazi General who could walk through walls, but, thankfully, not through bullets. There was a train bridge that I blew up, but the bridge didn't explode. The game still counted the bridge as destroyed, however. In the end, these were all small things that didn't really impact my overall enjoyment of the game. The Saboteur is definitely worth the asking price here on GOG, and it's a stellar deal if you can snag it on sale. I played for around 35 hours, and after finishing the main story, I still have perhaps 200 targets such as guard towers and propaganda speakers waiting to get blown up.

Pulpy, slightly janky, overall fantastic

This game is definitely one of these cult classics people only properly rediscover after a few years. Set in Paris during World War II, you play as an Irish car driver spurred to action against the Nazis after the death of his best friend. Said action involves a lot of explosions, gunfire, and cracked necks. All of these elements are fantastically put together - add Assassin's Creed style climbing, a dash of Hitman, and wrap it all an incredibly pulpy story, and you've got yourself a hell of a game. The story's very, very enjoyable and engaging, full of memorable setpieces - but if you're looking for a realistic, gritty take on French Resistance during WWII you probably should look somewhere else. It's not all perfect, of course. The game is slightly janky - unsurprisingly so, since Pandemic Games was never known for making perfectly polished products, and got unceremoniously killed off by Electronic Arts very soon after the game's release. The jank tends to mostly trend towards the weirdly charming kind, though - I can't recall stumbling upon any show-stopper bugs. Also, the vehicle handling is... perfectly serviceable. Despite these slight niggles, I'm still giving it 5/5 stars. Why? Not only is the game really fun to play, it also excels in the atmosphere department. The game employs a Sin City style black/white/vibrant accents color filter in territories you hadn't wrestled from Nazi control yet, giving off a sinister perpetual night time vibe. After conquering a territory, the constant night lifts, giving way to vibrant colors. A great soundtrack plays whenever you jump into a car - not always completely period accurate (a Leonard Cohen cover?) but always mood fitting. And on foot, you get accompanied by an ambient soundtrack that goes from wonderful slow, jazzy tunes in stealth and exploration to your standard period appropriate Nazi fightin' music when in combat. Get this. And GOG - thank you for bringing this game back for us all to enjoy!
