Loved the journey, not the destination

I must say… I was left just a little bit… disappointed by Obra Dinn in the end. I loved it in the beginning. The first impression was great – I was immediately in love with the graphical style which was really unique and beautiful in it’s simplicity. It seemed to really fit the “historical” setting of the game, because it almost looked like a moving pencil drawing made by someone of that era, perhaps the ship’s artist himself. And it’s simpleness didn’t detract from the player’s ability to notice details. The music was pretty atmospheric too – I didn’t love it as completely as I did the Arstotzka Theme, but then again – what can compete with the GREATEST COUNTRY? It was fitting and emphasied the various scenes pretty well And I really liked the deduction mechanic – validating the fates in sets of 3 left you enough of a wiggle room that you COULD make some educated guesses if you were stuck, or even completely cheese it as long as you were certain of at least some of the variables. And the thing is… I was really invested for most of it, even though I wasn’t really good. But in the end (the 100% fates correct ending) it didn’t really work that well for me. I was like “oh well, that is a story, for sure”. There was nothing in it and it’s conclusion that made me go “oh wow, that’s so great/deep/sad/interesting/whatever”. I was just like “oh ok, so that’s how it went”. It’s not that I didn’t like it – I did. I even loved most of it. But I loved the journey, not the conclusion. The conclusion felt… somewhat lackluster to me. I expected more and I don’t think I really got it. A mystery game that is like no other!

Return of the Obra Dinn is an investigative mystery game, much like games such as Her Story or The Last Express, where you play as an insurance investigator trying to found out what happened to this ship after it drifts into port many years after going missing at sea. Gameplay-wise it's quite simple; there's a lot fo exploration and with you is a journal that saves each event as you discover them. When you've gone through every "event/memory" the fun/hard part begins; you have to assign names of 60 people to the right person and also define their fate. Sounds harder than you might think! The story is in intriguing and since it's told non-chronologically you have to puzzle the pieces together yourself of what happened to various ship crew members and passengers. While there's not much you see of the characters or their personalities, they're still distinct in both appearance and voice; with various ethnical backgrounds and professions. This makes sure that you do recognize people in the varioius events/memories as you dig deeper into the game. Overall, this is a masterpiece and I'd love to see more games similiar to it but also more games from the developer himself. This is recommended to everyone who loves a good mystery, especially if you love solving them!

Outstanding achievement in gaming&art

A friend once said she didn't like to watch the mini series "The Night-Manager", because the main actor Tom Hiddleston is just too good, too good an actor, to smart, too good looking. This about sums up what I think about Lucas Pope, for one man to be such an impressive 3D shader programmer, artist, narrator and composer in one ... it's just unfair to us mere humans for one person to be so talented!

Good, but not quite up to its reputation

I strongly enjoyed the core gameplay of Return of the Obra Dinn. The puzzle solving is cleverly set up and implemented, and very original. The story is also inventive and does a great job in revealing its world through the very short vignettes. Sadly, I felt there were a few small detractions, so the game did not quite live up to its reputation. The biggest problem is visual. I don't usually care about graphics, but the one-colour imagery began to hurt my eyes after a while. More damningly, it made some important things difficult to properly see and identify. Also, for a story that started so powerfully, I felt it left a little too much unanswered by the end. Still, don't take this as a recommendation against this game. I certainly don't regret buying and experiencing it.

Excellent puzzle-solving that fizzles

I'll start by saying that I was completely hooked by this game from start to finish. I have some complaints about the ending, but when reflecting on it while writing this review I didn't feel it was enough to drop the game to 4 stars. It's quite simply a well put together game and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Lucas Pope has made a puzzle-game with some superb mechanics that keeps the game from devolving into a trial and error-affair (though admittedly I did get away with doing this once or twice). By only showing the correct answers once you've correctly identified people and their fates in batches of three, guesswork is made hard enough for you to want to go about things the proper way; and after having to look up some hints on how to progress I was surprised with just how many hints are sprinkled throughout the scenes. As a jaded gamer that has gotten too used with lazy world building and attention to detail from too many games I caught myself dismissing things that turned out to be vital clues, so I recommend keeping an eye out! The presentation is excellent, the simple graphics go a long way to help you focus on important clues, which is a common complaint I have with modern games that add too much detail compared to interactivity (a good example of what I mean is the modern Deus Ex games that need item highlighting to show you what is actually manipulable in the environment) As for my complaint about the lackluster ending, I won't deny that it's possible I am missing something, but it felt like the story never really wrapped up in a satisfying way. It's hard to hint at what I mean without spoilers, so I'll leave it at that.
