Realms of the Haunting

You simply can't replicate the charm that old games like these have to offer.

Done in the old DOS style, which allows cutscenese to flow remarkably freely. The FMV sections are a little less clear than today's graphics, and it certainly lays on the cheese factor, but goodness, this game brought a smile to my face. It's good. Play it.

Please let me know of any others out there but I haven't personally seen a game that blends point and click and shooter gameplay like this. Graphically the game looks fantastic and while I was streaming it to my friends they all couldn't tell if it was an old game, or a new game done in retro style, because visually everything holds up so well. Story is great if you enjoy campy FMV, some hilarious ranges of an actually well put together makeup for a demon or really neat looking prop all the way down to some dude in a t-shirt who's supposed to be from ancient times. And oh the acting, it's like I'm watching the final project of a college drama class. Only downsides I'd say are that I really progressed through the game in sprints, with random long stopping points because I couldn't find that one weird corner I overlooked or item combination to progress. I'd suggest to have a walkthrough open to the side just in case, especially since there's at least 1 section where you can get softlocked. Also, the inventory management can be a chore, having to equip a key to use the door each time, sometimes lost in a sea of keys you've slowly collected through your journey in an inventory you can only see two rows of at a given time. And finally the resolution of the maps and journals you pick up are near impossible for me to read, so I lost a lot of the background story elements in that regard but they didn't seem necessary to complete the game. It's a steal at this price, a great gaming experience for less than a cup of coffee!

Still one of my favourite all time games, written by the “legendary” Anthony Crowther. I loved it so much I played it a few more times and wrote my first and only walkthrough which is still around in various places - albeit often plagiarised. Good first person action with a variety of weapons, good object related puzzles, very decent FMV/acting, many a scary moment and a damn good story wraps ROTH up into one of the most underrated games of its time - possibly ever. At the time of writing ROTH is available for just a few pence/cents. Such good value I almost bought it again!

Top 5 games ever played in long 27 years of my playing history. Great mix of RP, Adventure, FPS, superb FMV and story. Highly recommended. This game has it own soul, not like the the modern scary horror titles. I've owned an original 4cd copy since the game release. It's only great that gog.com got this gem in its library. Buy it NOW.
