Not the remaster
This is the original Quake and expansions. It is not the recent HD remaster, which Steam users get included in their Quake purchases.

missing official sourceport and map pack
+ Quake 1 holds up great, play it with a source port like quakespasm and you should have a wonderful time. - The fact that the soundtrack is not implemented properly into this version is a crime. - The new official source port and level packs are not part of this release.

Twenty Years and Still Amazing.
I've played Quake on CD ROM, the GOG release for Windows, and some of the source ports for Windows and Linux. I use the .PAK files from the GOG release with the Dark Places source port for Linux (Mint 17.3). Every version has been amazing. PROS: + Still very much Quake. + Includes the Mission Packs. + Creepy, Lovecraftian atmosphere. + One of the best single player FPSes ever made. Period. + Fun multiplayer, with servers running all over the place. + Modest hardware requirements. + Worth every penny at $10. CONS: - No music.* *If you have the soundtrack from your old CD ROM, you can rip it as MP3/WAV/OGG and use it in one of the Quake source ports. There are how-tos all over the web.

Install QuakeSpasm, then type in the console/include in the config file the folliwing commands: gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_linear r_particles 2 r_viewmodel_quake 1 r_lerpmove 0 r_lerpmodels 0 This will emulate the software renderer feel of the original but with modern tweaks. The first line removes texture blurring (okay with CRT monitors and Voodoo back in the day, not really nice to look at today); the second string brings back square particles; the third changes positioning of the weapon to the classic setup, and the next two remove model interpolation -- animations are kind of stop-motion as in the original. Have fun!
