Like Ace Combat... but better (sort off)

When I started playing the game I thought it would be just another Ace Combat clone, with a poor technical aspect and a gameplay without aspirations. How wrong I was. This is by far the best airplane arcade game since the golden age of Ace Combat back in the distant days of PS2. This game breathes love and passion for what made the Project Aces series great, and is the best tribute fans could make for other fans. Not only does it take the best from the classic gameplay of the series, but it also incorporates some new features that are more than appreciated. The story, without being a candidate for a Nobel Prize in Literature, is gripping and satisfying. The graphics are not stunning but they are satisfactory and fulfill, thanks to the art style, to deliver a credible world and some scenarios that surprise for their immersiveness. Finally, it is inevitable to compare it with Ace Combat 7, and although it is inferior to it in some aspects (such as graphics), it is far superior in others (story, characters, game modes). Ace Combat 7.5

I'm only a few missions in, but it's an excellent arcade flight sim. Great missions that avoid a lot of the pitfalls Ace Combat falls into, and a menagerie of technically not copyrighted planes to fly (though if you're an aviation nerd, you can probably pick out what each bird is supposed to be), and tons of baddies to shoot at. I only have two major criticisms: the first is that the story isn't quite clear on some things. A bit more backstory, even in wingman dialogue would be nice. The other is the controller support. I'm not sure what's up with it, but out of the three different gamepads I own, I can't coax this game to talk to any of them. In the best of cases, it treats my Logitech F-710 as a mouse, which is not at all useful. Perhaps they can fix this in a patch or something. In the meantime, the game is awesome enough for me to muddle through with a mouse and keyboard (whose controls are surprisingly good, actually. All in all, four stars, and I'll upgrade it to five if either the developer or I can get gamepads working a bit more nicely.

Janky Ace Combat/10

Not much to say. A few framerate issues, lack of mission timers is actually a negative, everything else is ace combat style insanity and it works just as great here as it does there.

It plays like Ace Combat and was made by fans of Ace Combat. In short if you like Ace Combat you will love this game.

A product of passion

As a newcomer to these kinds of games, I really enjoyed my time with Project Wingman - even without having played the Ace Combat games, the quality speaks volumes as to the effort of the devs when you can understand how others say it "feels" to play. The only downside I would say this game has is the story, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to this glistening sea of a game. Highly recommended for anyone with even just a passing interest. Definitely will be keeping an eye on any future games from Sector D2.
