It's not quite on the par with the Sands of Time trilogy, but this is a great platformer, and a welcome addition to the Prince of Persia franchise! The platforming is fun, the world is pretty open, and the combat has a really good, rhythmic feel to it. As a few little bonuses, there are also unlocked costumes for the Sands of Time Prince, and Altair from Assassin's Creed. Still, for $10 this is a steal of a game, and an action based platformer well worth your time.!
This game is quite fun. At the core, it's a series of movement puzzles. The basic moves are jumps, wall runs, vaults and bar swings. The magic buttons you unlock later add a variety of impressive traversal sections: flying, leaping, running on the walls and ceilings like a spider. The graphic style is bright and unique, it aged gracefully and stands out among the drabness of that era of games.
The game doesn't have a fail state, you just try over and over - a brave move, in my opinion. This might seem like a total deal breaker. But you still have to do acrobatic sections over and over until you nail them.
Where it fails is the combat part. You get the same 5 or 6 enemies over and over, fight them one-on-one, in boring and unfairly restricted arenas. The combat heavily relies on quick-time-events and especially on mashing buttons quickly. This didn't age well, even if this was normal at the time, it feels borderline dumb today. You also get to do combos, but they are trivial.
In addition, I think they went a bit overboard with the flying sections of the game. The flying buttons send you flying on convoluted trajectories, you have little of control to avoid obstacles, and it's unclear half of the time which way you are supposed to go.
Another complaint is the way the game is structured, you have to beat a level - an open arena map, and then you activate the light seeds - collectable "coins" - that you have to gather around the map. This forces you to explore the map over and over. It gets boring pretty fast to go back and forth trying to scrape enough seeds to unlock new maps.
This version of the game is a bit frustrating: the intro, movies and in-game dialogue scenes are unskippable (tip: delete the movie files to skip the intro). The button labels are a bit confusing, whether you have an Xbox or Playstation controller, it takes a bit of time to get used to it. It took me a bit of googling to get it to work properly.
Every couple of years I just get the need to replay this Prince of Persia. The gameplay is not demanding, but it is a very beautiful journey, has excellent character banter and a simple story with a bit of heartwrench to it. It's a perfect game for sitting in a warm and cozy room after having had too much food during the holidays. It's not my favorite PoP game, but I have replayed it more often than any part of the Sands of Time trilogy.
Here's a thing with Prince of Persia 2008 that gets me most - the characters are horrible. Yeah, you might've heard complaints about the lack of challenge (and there is no challenge in the game, yes), because you can't die or truly fail. Complaints about the one-butoon-ness of the game (and it is done to the extreme), the awful combat system, which (as you can't fail completely) just stretches fights to go on and on until you do it like the game wants... But people tend to like the story and characters for some reason. "Oh, it's a good love story," - they go. Yeah, it's as good a love story as a boy and his hamburger in a fast-food restaurant.
So, what is good about the game? The setting and the style. Yes, game obviously got influenced by some great japanese games (like Ico or Okami). And i personally see nothing wrong with (getting influenced), especially if you're influenced by something fantastic. They look great, they feel great, the are quite fun to explore. It would've been fun, if the gameplay wouldn't feel like an extended QTE, yeah. But it's still fun to explore the world and collect lums. I mean, they're not called lums, but they always reminded me of lums from Rayman series.
So, on the art and setting alone it is already quite good to check out. It also does have some good concepts once in a while. Does them wrong, but you can at least like him for trying. Still, of all "big" Prince of Persia games, this one is probably second worst (with worst being Prince of Persia 3D, obviously).
I love The Prince of Persia series. It took me a while to play this entry due to the slightly negative critics reviews, but I finally got into it.
The game looks nice, and the music is soothing. Even though it's an old game, the cell-shading graphics are still good. Apart from some jagged textures, it still holds up well to the test of time.
Gameplay is responsive, and traversing the various scenarios is fluid. The decision to not add lives and game over screens make the exploration interesting and frustration-free. But it renders fights useless. By the way, I don't even know why the creators added combat to this game. It is the worst I have ever seen. You can kill an enemy with one shot if you pin it against the edges of the arena. Otherwise, it's just a repetition of the same sequence of attacks. Not only you cannot die, nothing happens if you're "critically" injured. The enemy doesn't regenerate health (thank goodness, cause it would be even worst to repeat the sequence of attacks again), you don't lose orbs, nothing. I bet you could walk away and go to the bathroom during a fight. No consequences. I found combat not only frustrating, but a complete waste of time.
By the way, even exploration can be boring. There are no puzzles. Each of the 4 different scenarios are divided in 4 sub-areas interconnected in a circle. In these, you jump your way to the middle, unlock some orbs, and then proceed to collect them. That's it. Not only it doesn't offer any challenge, you have to repeat it a couple of times in order to collect the orbs to open the next area.
The story is weak, dialogues range from OK to slightly bad, and characters are kinda likeable, but don't offer any interesting development. I think it's on the same level of the original PoP (from 1989).
TLDL: The game is an easy and relaxing distraction, but is boring and repetitive. Gameplay is responsive, but there are no challenges, no great story and no surprises. It's just meh.
