This game is mostly good for its beautiful environment. I just completed the game and it was enjoyable with fun characters and interesting story. Though, I did not really enjoy the items in the game. They were not really that fun and there was no real unique/rare items except some sould bound stuff. The unique items only had a couple of attributes extra that you could not craft yourself.
But it was a good game, but very very far away from Baldurs Gate series.
I enjoyed it so it's worth playing it!
Pillars gets its worldbuilding right, the plethora of options allows the player to truly characterise their own avatar and allows for extensive role playing. The supporting cast of in game npc's are not as compelling. They don't lack for variety, and the characters are by no means simplistic or stereotypical and yet they fail to engage, their stories simply being ticked off as quests for additional experience.
The story of Pillars is unique and offers some intriguing insights into the ethos and reality of the world. A region is torn asunder by the failure of it's population to beget children. Without a hope for future generations the citizens become restless placing their hopes with petty tyrants and other charlatans who offer them consolation through temporary solutions. Enter the hero, you, to shape the climate of the world to your vision.
The gameplay harkens back strongly to the Infinity Engine games that Pillars was inspired by. The restricted movement, specific skill sets of character classes and party structure all add to the depth and complexity offering a variety of tactical elements to try in battle. The games difficulty can be adjusted allowing for varied challenge levels depending on the player, those who prefer tactical gameplay or those who prefer to resolve warfare quickly in order to proceed with the story.
The game introduces some interesting classes, such as the chanter, who at first seems similar to a bard but in fact has some underlying mechanics that add a layer of subtlety to battles. There are of course your standard damage dealers, tanks and crowd control classes as well, and classes can be customized somewhat to play to particular skill sets. The game can offer hour's of fine tuning and tinkering with skills, abilities, spells etc. This customizability caters to a variety of playstyles which benefits the gamer.
This is a welcome return to the CRPG genre and the ode to the Infinity Engine games of yesteryear.
Because of the nature of the game (there ain't many kids around for story reasons), everyone is kind of subdued. The scenario really is dire. It's not grimdark, but the entire game seems to have a dark cloud above it. Enemies don't respawn in areas, which makes the world feel even more dead as you tread through quiet, empty space. Your character also inherits a serious problem right away... but it never develops into anything serious and for most of the game it never comes up as a bad thing even a little bit.
When spending ability points on your character, each ability point brings skills up something like, for example, 1.5%. There's no hard jump at certain point levels that make it useful to go up to a certain point then stop. If you want to be great at something, you need all your points in that. At the same time, every ability seems important for most classes, so you could find yourself spreading a character thin.
There's no need for inventory management. You get this magic stash accessible from anywhere (or from towns in expert mode), so pick up all of them corpse armours and sell each of 'em for very little money! Honestly, whether you like this or not is up to you. It's realism vs. ease of use.
The fights are ok. Sometimes a slog? I'm rarely excited to fight. If you have spell casters, just nova the enemy: resting is cheap and some of your spell levels become instantly recastable at higher character levels. There are no (or few?) hard stops: like, if you "paralyse" an enemy, they just become slow for 4.7 seconds or if they do actually pause they maybe stop entirely for 0.7 seconds. All effects have durations like that, reliant on your skills which rely on your ability scores.
Enemy AI targets the party member who wears the weakest armour. This can get really annoying as they sprint or teleport to that party member. Control this by giving everyone similarly ranked armour.
You can also knock down dragons with a punch: they crumple! Pro? Con? You decide!
I haven't played the game through yet, but I've spent at least 40 hours exploring it. This game can be amazing but the it requires some work from the user:
1. Adjust the difficulty to as high as possible without preventing progress. Every time the combat begins and starts, the game "halts" for about a second to move itself in-and out of combat mode, so you'll want to make the combat worth your while.
2. Adjust the auto pause settings. There are a whole bunch of settings on how the game-time moves or doesn't, you'll want to explore every tick in the box individually.
3. Take the time. You'll want to have at least 2h of uninterrupted game time each time you sit down to play: this game moves really slow! You'll also want to reserve about 8h For your first crack at the game, because it'll take some time to develop the addiction/fall in love. If you never have 8h uninterrupted game time, reading the included Strategy Guide back to back before even launching the game may help compensate.
The included manual is outdated and some mechanics described therein are outdated. You'll want to consult the fandom wikia for up-to-date info.
The story is delicately written, and each special item also has its own story. Character abilities, talents, etc, are well-designed. And user interface and OST are excellent. These aspects make you feel the developers are serious and careful in making and polishing this game. Although there are some very few wokeness in a certain romance and in the character creation screen, the overall game is still worth recommending. I would say classic RTwP cRPG lovers won't regret trying out this game.
