First of, I waited until a month after the release of the game to avoid any major bugs and indeed did not experience any gamebreaking issues. The game is still being patched, but the current state is perfectly playable.
Second, I found the gameplay to be marginally improved over the first Kingmaker game (which I liked a lot). The addition of the turn-based mode will please a lot of players. The story is totally different, much more epic and grand and kind of less personal, for me still very engaging. The writing is mostly good, the NPCs are mostly good, same as in the previous game.
The reviews here are mostly negative. I believe this is mostly due to the amount of bugs the game had at launch. So I would suggest that you focus on the more recent reviews to find out about the current state of the game.
Overall, one of the best CRPGs I ever played (over the last 25 years). It was very intensive, included some very cool moments, made me think hard about a lot of the choices I needed to make, and included some crazy difficult fights on an epic scale. These are for me the defining characteristics of a great RPG.

Story is cool but after 10h i've lost epic emotions. I just want some simplified english, without some "poetic/political/fantasy" mix of long portions of reading. I dont feel in normal life talks have a similar mileage. I feel much more natural with Skyrim, Fallout 4, WItcher, Fallout4 dialogue system.
I dont like DnD skills logic - its just in one world "dumb" or "obsolete". Maybe card games could be cool but i'd rather want to play something which is more simulation than frustration with weak buggy pathfinding, team not avoiding traps, dumb rest system where using magic is tireing but using swords isnt. This game should be more sim less TableTop dream of some fanatic.
So after getting 150h in and about 1/4 down on my 2nd play through on my mac (in case your a mac user thinking about getting the game).
First the graphics. The game does looks very good some performance issues when it comes to some settings. Its nothing major but even on the best mac setup stutter and fps drops are an issue. This has been fixed in the patches that have been released to a point.
Gameplay/story wise so the most important parts of the game :).
The story is very good. Ive seen people complaining that your "on your path to godhood" kind of game and that is true. But it all makes sense the further in the story you get and it gets explained how and why and its not as simple as "your special".
Companions are fun some of them are so much fun the banter and the personalities and quests are quite fun. My bigest issues with the companions is that they are just week the builds most of them come in cant do much and you cant build something to great and that becomes an issue on higher difficulties.
Bugs just as in the first pathfinder game are there and some of them got me confused its like the devs did not reuse what they already had working correctly and wrote it from 0. They do get patched so its not a major issue imho. One thing I would love is if they stoped using Unity a buggy game engine = a buggy game.
Overall a solid game if I could give it 4.5 stars I would. Definitely worth a buy.
I backed the game on beta 4 months ago, played over 400 hours on steam, filled countless breaking bug tickets, it was in a way worse state, they apparently listened to all breaking bugs because it really look and feels like the definitive version of what I had played so far. An advice to people crashing, look at your hardware, drivers ect. I'm a bit high end on my part and it uns quite smoothly after 9 hours non stop, no crashes and it happened a lot on the same rig during beta. It would be sad to miss such an amazing experience for an issue than can be fixed on your end. I suggest also visiting the discord as the dev team is actively still fixing the reamaining bugs in the game. It's way more stable than launched Kingmaker that's for sure.
