Excellent mechanics, great presentation

This is less of a strict "puzzle" game, more of a game about mechanisms and experimentation. Tightly designed, elegantly presented, Opus Magnum is an excellent way to stretch your brain a bit and have fun in the process. One of its greatest strengths is that it sets a goal, gives you the tools, then gets out of the way. You can be creative, efficient, or somewhere in between, so long as you achieve the desired output with your machine. It's by far my favorite "thinking" game at the moment, precisely because it's built to encourage making your own solutions instead of finding the developer's solution. Highly recommended.

A fine remake of the old flash game

For players who enjoyed Magnum Opus, this is a fine mix of nostalgia and improvements: The new version sheds the Adobe Flash dependency, and adds a story, and some features found in SpaceChem (e.g. in arms in Magnum Opus could not move on tracks). Overall, most of the campaign puzzles were fun. It's nice to be able to store separate solutions to a single puzzle, optimizing for cost, speed and size. At the same time, for a programming-based puzzle game, there are some glaringly obvious missing features: - The game interface does not offer any sort of loop construct (beyond a simple "repeat all previous instructions"), or conditionals. This poor interface/language design makes many levels far more difficult than they need to be (e.g. players may find themselves copying and pasting blocks of instructions dozens of times in order achieve something that could have been done by adding some sort of equivalent of a for-loop, or just allowing the existing "repeat" instruction to start repeating from a chosen point, rather than the very start of a program. - Also missing are subroutines or functions. Players will need to re-write the same basic short grab-rotate-release program sometimes more than a dozen times in a single level. - Multi-armed manipulators seem like a great idea, but they're missing commands to grab/release different arms independently, which severely limits their usefulness. - Late-game puzzles seem to concentrate on cramming complex machines into impractically-small irregularly-shaped areas, which can make them feel more like work than fun. All-in-all I'd say this is a good game, but it cries out for an expansion/patch to add a new/longer story campaign and improve the programming language. If and when that happens, it could turn this into a great game.

Very Short

I decided to get it to support the dev, since I've enjoyed the other "coding puzzle" games they've released in the past. Unfortunately...I got to the credits in this game in less than two days (it would have been one day if I'd not left the final puzzle until the next day). There is one post-credits chapter which introduces some new mechanics as well as a mini-game using marbles (with no undo button form moves) and a Journal that I stumbled upon while seeking the Options menu that includes an additional 30 puzzles (it's in the right-hand corner of the selection screen, if anyone's looking for it). The Tutorial Stages give you very little thinking to do, but do an okay job presenting the parts and mechanics they introduce. Unfortunately, this does mean the post-credit chapter had items that aren't clear in their use until you've bumbled in the stage itself for a while. The game is missing the "pause" option to put into a code in order to let it play until you're in the segment you want to work at. It has a copy-paste option that requires you to know that you're to hold down CTRL when moving the code to duplicate it, and it is rather painful to move code further along the string, since you are unable to move the code and drag the section for coding at the same time. If you're moving a long bit of code, it is quite easy to accidentally drop it on a code further along and have the game reset it back to its original position. TLDR: Tutorial has only one puzzle where you are not following prompts on the screen. Chapter 1 has 8 puzzles. Chapters 2-4 have 7 puzzles each. Chapter 5 has only 6 puzzles. Post-credit chapter has 11-12 puzzles. [Haven't unlocked the final slot, but suspect that's going to be a closing story segment.] Journal has 30 puzzles. Mini-game has no story elements added after 100 wins.

More than just the main story line

Unless I missed it, no one has metioned the extremely fun puzzle editor. (click icon bottom right corner) .I didn't even know it had this feature for the first 8 hours! It is really fun. You can design your own product and what reagents are allowed to solve it. In the design template, I filled every possible hex with a gold atom and connected them all to see if I could solve it. Yes, but it took over an hour. Best feature of the game. The story is cute and not too hard and like another reviewer, this is the first Zachtronics game I finished.

Surprisingly Fun Puzzle Game

This was one I picked up on sale and just thought it looked interesting. I have found myself playing this way longer than I thought. I even see multiple playthroughs in order to beat my previous times/cost/area. It is a nice game for thought, but doesn't require a lot fo fast reaction. Nice casual game when you want a challenge but not to be on the edge of your seat.
