A flawed masterpiece...

The good: - Amazing visual design, world design, and ambient story telling. I lost track of how many times I turned a corner and went "Wow!" There is a huge variety of different cultures and places put together in a way that makes sense and carries the story forward. This is by far the game's strongest point: the sheer artistry of it. - I found most puzzles in this one more fair than the classics like Myst and Riven. Most of the time there was a pretty clear goal in mind and it was more "how do I accomplish this" rather than wondering what the heck I was supposed to be doing. - Addition of in-game camera for quick snapshots means I don't have to play with a pen and paper next to my keyboard the whole time trying to copy maps and diagrams. The bad: - Many times puzzles will require you to "swap" between different worlds. Even on my reasonably powerful CPU with plenty of memory and loading from a solid state disk, this process is not instant. Some puzzles that involve multiple swaps become a test of patience because even though you can clearly see what you need to do, each step involves a loading screen. There is also a great deal of walking and backtracking because sometimes you will need to swap, then get back to that point by another route to avoid re-swapping. - The curse of the point and click adventure game lives on: two of the puzzles left me stuck because I failed to make an intutive leap based on some tiny detail. - Some parts of the game seem rushed, like there's very little background sound, and one of the main characters is a 2D video despite other characters being 3D models. - The ending made me very angry. There's actually two ways the game can end: one is very much better for you than the other. The deciding factor between them is, as far as I could tell, hinted at very early in the game when you have no idea what's going on or what anything means. Such an utterly essential detail needs to be underlined.

One flaw ruins all

The game is fun, until you get to the super annoying teleportation puzzles where you spend 2/3 of the time in the loading screen.

beautiful, flawed

Ambiance, gameplay, overall theme are all great. The puzzles, however, go from engaging and fun to just mystifying and frustrating. I got fairly far along, but after running through some inscrutable puzzles, looking up their solutions on YouTube and determining "I would *never* have figured that one out" I lose interest. I may not be a puzzles savant, but I'm a reasonably intelligent and analytical guy. Some of this game's puzzles are just badly done. I don't regret the money spent. The first (probably more than half) of the game I got through was great. And if you don't begrudge using walkthroughs for the really tough parts maybe the whole thing is great for you. Just not for me.

Short but sweet, and very well made

I would strongly recommend this game. By modern standards, Obduction is a fairly short game with about 12 to 20 hours of playtime, depending on how much you get stumped by the logic and math puzzles. Also, the replayability is not great. Once you finish the game, a full replay will take you only a few hours and offer mostly the same experience. This was the case for earlier Cyan games as well, and any other puzzle game for that matter. Once you figure out the puzzles, most of the challenge is simply gone. However, I found the 15-16 hours of my first playthrough to be an absolutely top notch experience, providing all the awe and amazement I remember from earlier Cyan titles. The puzzles are enjoyable, but not terribly difficult and, in my opinion, never frustrating. Obduction was not as difficult as I remember Myst and its descendants, but that might just be a side effect of me having a lot more gaming experience than what I had back then. In any case, I didn't need any hints for this game, but it was still difficult enough to be a nice challenge. Towards the end of the game, the loading times can become frustrating as you need to swap between levels quite a lot. If you don't install the game to an SSD, you might need quite a bit of patience during the last few hours. It's generally worth the wait, though. The attention to detail and the incredible amount of work that went into the level design is impressive, and it shows best if you have a beefy GPU. Even though this is a slow-paced puzzle game where all the focus is on exploration and taking in the great views, it's made in a first person 3D engine, and the graphics rendering requires quite a lot of horsepower. With all the sliders at maximum, it's a breathtakingly beautiful game, but it's not bad looking even if you bring the sliders down a notch or two.

Too much walking

The game is ok, the gameplay is really stretched because of walking and all transportation "riddles". If you try to explore possibilities you are in for lots of walking from A to B with nothing in between. "riddles" are really simple, the biggest challenge is to actually find an object or a place that you had no idea that exists to progress. If you miss that one thing, you can walk next to it 100x and be no wiser. Visuals 10/10.
