Crazy long loading time

The game itself is good, and it does bring back wonderful memories of the past games, such as Myst and Riven, but the loading times are far too long. Booting the game takes 2 minutes, but pressing resume takes approximately 10 minutes! Strangely enough, I found that if I press LOAD rather than RESUME, it only takes 2-3 minutes to load my last save. Inside the game, however, there are more loading issues, such as moving from one zone to the next. These take another 2-3 minutes, and some puzzles require you to regularily jump back and forth. I have an i7 machine, which is capable of loading other games in seconds. I found that even after installing it on an SSD it's still very slow. I'm hoping the developers can do something about this, but at the moment it just looks like they've done a poor job optimizing the game. Beyond that, it's beautiful, with some interesting (with the occasional stupid) puzzles.

Released too soon too many bugs

Beautiful graphics, decent puzzles that allow you to figure out (except for the maze). Unfortunately, wished there was an option on the menu to save game to a name instead of just one major save. After spending untold hours in these worlds, found myself at the bottom of a pod in netherland or when trying a load instead of resume, just floating. Game is hosed. It has some slow moments (esp in the first tree where you wonder if you are hosed or timing...). However, seems to be quite a few glitches in searching the web. It is apparent my game is toast. My husbands game is so far okay but I dont hold out hope. Its not the money, its the time. Not a student, work a 24 oncall job and finding time to blow on this game was tight. There is no way I am starting at the beginning again. If we're all beta it would be nice to know. If you want to try this game, I'd wait a year to see if they can get it paste glitchville.

Started strong, finished weak

The first section of the game is excellent. Felt like the first time I played Myst many years ago. But once you progress past the first area, the game quickly jumps on rails. The puzzles became less interesting and more tedious. Environments became more linear. Bugs started popping up and performance dipped when it had no reason to. It felt like the developers had to rush to finish it and just started cutting corners to do what they could with the time (money?) they had. I will say that the story was well thought out and paced throughout the game, and they did a good job revealing it as the game progressed. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to carry it. Had the entire game been like that first hour or so, it could have been a masterpiece, but sadly if flopped for me.

buggy game

This is potentially the most amazing game i have ever played, BUT it crashes. Also it doesnt run that well even on a gtx 980ti. I had to turn the graphics down a lot to get a non janky ,relatively non stuttery frame rate. The final straw was the last crash where it corrupted my game save, so now it wont load. Well thats the end of Obduction for me! Uninstalled and playing some non crashing games! This had some amazing moments, but the Vliein bridges section was infuriating, just so cryptic and each time you teleport, you have to wait and wait, while the frame rate drops away to a few frames per second, which is just about as interesting as watching paint dry. If a game stops moving forward( or goes round in circles) , there is a point where i will just abandon a game, the FUN is gone at that point.So the last teleport where i thought it was nearing solving that level, it crashes and messes my game save. end of story. I get they were going for amazing graphics(which is true) but the performance just kills it. It negatively affects the game play and immersion. Ah well...

An addictive, but imperfect experience

Obduction is the latest game from Cyan, which made Myst and Riven in the 1990s. What's nice about Obduction is that it feels like its own game and isn't necessarily dependent upon the legacy of those 'classics'. There are a lot of subtle nods to the previous games, but nothing about those references makes the game inaccessible to someone who either didn't play or did not like Myst, Riven, etc. Certain sound effects, environmental items and the use of FMVs act as little easter eggs to those who have played the other games. Obduction is a puzzle-adventure game, meaning that the story unfolds as you open up more of the environment and interact with its features. The graphics are unnoticeable, which I guess suggests that they're good, as I felt immersed in the world. The system spec requirements are a bit ridiculous, though. With greater optimisation, I feel that they might have done a better job getting the game to run nicely on more modest setups. The puzzles are logical and not necessarily infuriating in the way that some of the more obtuse puzzles of Riven were. Still, there are a couple of times where there are not enough substantial environmental clues to give you a clear idea how to progress. However, generally speaking, there is a great sense of satisfaction when you actually manage to crack a puzzle. The sense of discovery is pretty immense in this game. The game's biggest problem, and it is one of both design and implementation, is that a few late-game puzzles are heavily reliant on going back and forth between environments and various nodes. I followed the developers' advice and installed the game on my SSD and the incessant loading times when "linking" to different areas was annoying even then, given that I had to do it so frequently. I can't imagine what it would be like to play the game off of an HDD. Anyway, Obduction is totally worth your time and maybe consider picking it up when it's 25% off or something like that.
