Far from Cyan's best games

I have played the game twice - once at release and now I gave it a second chance and I really tried to like it but eventually I got frustraded ... again. The design of the world and especially some of the puzzles is what makes whole the experience tedious. Imagine a big world with great scenery - very linear, long walks where you can interact with just... 10 levers/machineries but to get to some of them you have to backtrack to the beginning a few times. Or a puzzle where loading screens take more time than solving the puzzle - you see the solution but you are forced to do some extremely tedious actions which bring zero quality to the game only frustration! And every time after I did such a puzzle I was thinking this would be the last one just to end up in another place where to progress I needed to backtrack to the beginning just to flip a simple switch and then come back again! Majority of my time in the game was spent walking... And since I vaule the puzzles the most in these games I can't say I had fun walking around(or watching loading screens)! The story was okay, the music was very good - reminded me of the old Myst music. I often had issues reading some of the notes - they were in such bad shape I could not read that easly. I had to use external sources to read many of the notes/books. The camera menu which was part of some of the Myst games is also great addition but it is poorly implemented. The access to it is extremely slow - no shortcut button to open it right away.

One of the Greatest

One of my favorite games of all time. Captured the wonder of coming into a new world, an interesting exploration and puzzle mechanic, and just a fantastical time. I adored this, and am playing it for the third time.

Somewhat decent?

I went more or less halfway through the game. I like the premice, the general atmosphere and the vibe. Lots of backtracking when you're musing around trying to think how you could solve this and that, but eh, well. What I didn't like is at some point, puzzles become a backtracking with loading screen combo. Iterating on a puzzle configuration becomes a tedious chore very quickly. Backtracking to iterate on a puzzle is not ideal but why not, but if you add a loading screen on top of that, you're pushing it. And at some point, two puzzles in a row are just that. Thanks, but no thanks.

Beautiful and Challenging

First, I am a fan of Cyan games, so I already have a bent towards this type of game. It can take some time to make it through the entire game, but it doesn't seem like it because it is so engaging. The puzzles are very good, and don't seem like puzzles for puzzles sake - they fit the game. You have to learn the story as you go - which is part of the fun. Highly recommended!

Fun, But Slightly Flawed

First, let me say that fans of Myst, Riven, and other adventure/puzzle games of the sort will not be disappointed with Obduction. It's a difficult game, but there's an internal logic to it and it never feels like it's being unfair or asking you to make absurd leaps to solve problems. Now, getting to the "slightly flawed" part... I'd have to say that the plot is paper thin here. That means the ending, once you hit it, lacks any kind of emotional impact. If a player is just looking to reach an "end point" in the game, there's nothing to complain about there, but if you want a sense of closure, there's not a lot to go on here. I may be alone in that. Beyond that, the game seems to want for some optimization as of version 1.5.2. I'm running an AMD system at 4.0 ghz with 16gb of RAM and an R9 390 w/ 8gb of video RAM and it required a LOT of tweaking to the page files to keep from crashing. Even with that handled, there were a lot of frame rate drops and instances of texture popping while moving through the various areas of the game world. Were I barely scraping the bottom of the system requirements, that would make sense. As it is, I'd call it functional, but a little broken. Apparently, this can be fixed if you roll back to version 1.4 using GOG Galaxy, but I was too far in the game to want to risk losing my save when I found that out. Bottom line: even for these flaws, I played through to the end, had some fun and don't consider the time wasted. The environments are beautiful, the sound design and music are great (was there ever a doubt?), and the puzzles are challenging, but never feel unfair. Just do yourself a favor and poke around the environments. If you're stuck, chances are you overlooked a path, a note with a critical bit of information, or something along those lines.
