Missed Potential
This game sounded great and looked pretty cool before it was released. It could have been great if they spent more time on an actual game with a story and didn't obsess with the "inifinte universe." It's a massively open world exploration experience that promises endlessly varying worlds to explore. Even with a quintillian different planets every thing you do and see always feels like de ja vu. I got tired of the game after a few hours of gameplay because the plot (if there even is one) is barely there and adds nothing. Honestly I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do anyway since it seems the game stops giving you clues once you get to around your 3rd hyperspace jump. Planets are all VERY similar despite what they'd tell you in the hype. Every building, space station, encampment, ruin are repetitive and uninteresting. Combat is pointless and not fun as it is now. You have to recahrge shield from the menu, but while you do there is no pause. You continue to get pummeled while you fumble around doing so. Upgrading your ship and gear is a grind and inventory management is annoying and a huge pain. For example when you sell items the game always defaults to all of your stock. You can lower the number, but you have to sit there a click or hold the button for what feels like an eternity if you need to lower significantly. Puzzles are simple and are either total guesswork if you don;t know enough of the alien languages, or they are simplistic number puzzles that a 5yr old could figure out. That said the exploration potential could have been massively fun. The art style is interesting cool with the vibrant yet somehow pastel-ish color schemes. I really hope the dev's take this engine and put a proper game around it one day or let others use it to do so.
