old engine but good!

though a lot is said about WWII, the gulf war and even our recent wars, not many games or movies on WWI or the "Great War" as it was called in WWI time! This game goes well into it, it is primarily a "subplot" to use an analogy in that war. though the game deals mainly with a single soldier trapped in a bazaar circumstance, it does give you sa bit of insite into tte actual Great War of the early 1900's. the bulk fo the game is a side quest of dealing with strange supernatural occurances in underground labrinthes. you have the traditional mundaine wheapons at your disposal which makes it all the more cool you rely on conventional means and your wit to survive and progress rather than laser guns and BFGs or what not. they didn't have those in 1916, by the way! The only thing lacking is flying a WWI fighter plane in addtion to being a footman! now THAT would be cool! The game or at least its engine is older than I thought but it is a trusty old steed so it works well in this game. the action is tense and at times difficult to gage what is going on, as in a real fight in a war situation! I highly recommend you get the entire series incuding the prequal, "Lost Company"!

Very easy and repetitive but fun

This is a really interesting shooter that feels like a sort of lesser painkiller. The game centers around a war between vampires and demons that is going on during human's WW1. The plot is kinda stupid and ridiculious but I kinda enjoy it for it's stupidity and how silly the concept of vampires fighting demons is. Gameplay wise the game is pretty fun, especially during the second half of the game when you get a gauntlet that has blades attached to it like Wolverine. There are also really fun vampire weapons in the second half of the game like an incredibly fast firing SMG with a 550 max bullet carrying capacity so you can kinda just go nuts with it or a weird looking shotgun that does a ton of damage. This game is very repetitive though, guns and your wolverine claw are fun to use at first but after hours of killing the same few enemies over and over in very samey enviroments it gets kinda boring and just annoying. The levels can be up to an hour long at times. The game is also stupidly easy, with you tearing through hundreds of enemies with 0 difficulty. I played on normal and you can't change difficulty after starting the game, so I just played the whole game mindlessly mashing the melee button. Health regenerates wildly quickly and you have an isanely big health bar to the point that standard enemies will never kill you. The game works as a really fun power fantasy for a few hours but has no depth to keep me engaged, I think this game would have grealty benefitted from being about 5 or 6 hours instead of the current 8 to 9 hours with levels being shortened so there's less repition and the game is more focused on the fun boss fights and cool setpieces, with less time spent killing the same few standard enemies over and over. This game has a lot of fun in it but you have to be bored for a while to get to the fun. It is worth it for the price but I probably won't replay this game any time soon. Also, cool art and world design that has aged well

3/4 great game, 1/4 mistake

3/4 of this game are amazing fun, great setting, nice missions, good combat, everything you want from a boomer shooter and more. Then the last couple of levels arrive and ruin everything, to give you an example, in the last level before the final boss you have to kill around 500 enemies, the whole level is black and red, and the enemis are...black and red, also of the 500, around 400 are just the same enemy, over and over and over and over. It feels like most of the game was developed by great designers, while the last bit was done by the junior team in a week. Still a good game, I just think it would have been received better if some of the last levels had been completely cut from the it.

Had potential

It's got the charm and the gameplay but it being so clunky kinda ruins the game in certain aspects. Guns are a hit-and-miss, movement is too slow, the bosses aren't good, the 'vehicle' sections, while cool, drag on longer than they need to be, and fighting bosses are not good. The story was fairly interesting and the level designs were solid, I think the game shines with the challenges (except the last one)
