MegaRace 1+2

Man, I played the original on my 3DO and loved it. A really zany, wacky arcade racer. Not my usual fare, but I liked it. Never thought I would see it again. It's worth $6 for the nostalgia rush alone! ;) This is a great "I've got 1/2 hour to kill" kind of game. You can just pick it up and play and have fun. The graphics must be dated (I have not downlaoded it yet) but who cares? It's the price of a burger! There was a lot of experimentation and originality going into games during this time. In game video was new (and primitive) but often used to better effect than in modern games. Lance Boyle really is a hoot! Gotta have it. ;)

Beware any reviewer that 'remembers when', or includes a lengthy anecdote from their childhood. If you've never played these games before, then skip them here. There a waste of time and money. The most lauded aspect of these games are the cutscenes, of which there are numerous and lengthy. All of them amount to a cheesy host giving hokey setups to the story and levels. They really aren't funny. Look them up on YouTube if don't believe me. As for the actual 'game' part of the game, it's even more boring. Both of these games are cookie-cutter combat racers with exactly zero frills or features. The tracks are pre-rendered, which may have looked nice once upon a time, but now take away any sense of speed or movement as they scroll by the same way, every single lap. The combat is just as bland- line up your missiles and landmines and hope you don't run out before the level is over, 'cause you won't get a refill. I'm not just complaining that this game doesn't hold up to today's standards, because you could pull out your Super Nintendo, Genesis, PlayStation, or any other system of the era and find tons of still-fun combat racers, such as the Road Rash franchise, Skitchin', Rock 'N Roll Racing, or heck, play Mario Kart. Any of them. Stay away from this one. Spend your cash on a fast food combo or something.

the first game is awful but lance boyle is an iconic character and there's a lot of cheesy game show fmv to enjoy if you can endure the races. the second plays much better and also has a lot of fmv. without those I would've never bothered for long (and would've given it fewer stars).

The gameplay is mediocre at best for Megarace 1. It feels like an NES game with an FMV game show host and better graphics tacked on. It's as buggy as an NES game too. The game show host is pretty funny though and I liked the setting. If you pick up this game, know that you're picking it up for the attitude. I enjoyed what I played of it, but know that the game is very basic. Megarace 2, well.... the host is not as funny. And while Megarace 2 is now 3D it uses some sort of weird screwed up fixed angle camera or something that really messes with you trying to drive. Weapons are also largely useless in 2. Not really worth playing IMO.

This game is anything but new and exciting, which is what I love about it. It brings me back to the days when my Packard Bell 66Mhz machine was king with a single speed cdrom drive, and windows95 update disc. The tunes are just as I remembered them and took me back many years in time, totally worth the $6.00!
