This game comes over as a smoothed out,and for the casual gamer simplified version of older MOO`s
with influences of CivV written all over it. The UI is intuitive and the grafics are ok for a 2016 game but imho for example the older GalCivII looks better. Compared to classic 4x games like Pax Imperia or
Imperium Galactica this game is shallow and can only score point with better grafics.
I unlocked this game for free only a few days ago, so bear in mind that my review is based on the quality of the game itself, rather than whether or not it's worth the asking price.
This game is fun. However, it lacks the depth necessary for it to be truly engaging. It's turn-based strategy lite.
As I'm writing this review, Master of Orion is on sale, with 50% off (£11.59). At such a price, I would argue that it's worth the purchase. However, at its regular price (£22.99), I would hesitate. If the asking price decreases below £15, or the game goes on sale, I would recommend it to people attempting to break into the 4X strategy genre. If you've played numerous 4X games before playing his one, I would say that it's not worth your time.
As a fan of MOO 2 for 20 years, I really enjoy this game (once I installed UCP and 5X - The Ultimate Balance Mod ;-) ). The game has really appealing graphics and voice acting, it feels like MOO and even adds some improvements to the formula (realtime fights being one of them).
With mods, this game exactly fits the sweet-spot of the original… And this makes the only problem with it that much bitter - game is extremely unoptimized by towards the end (after about turn 200) - even on medium galaxy sizes turns start taking more and more time, easily reaching into a minute of calculation on a 4-core I7 (yet still utilizing just 1 core). Seriously, I would pay double the full price again if only they optimize it (and maybe add even more modability support? ).
I had a really good time last time I played it. I was having some problems but after asking for some help I was informed the problem was likely a mod, and it was: do not install George G. Resources Mod.
Now, I really recommend the game with 5X and UCP (just forget about playing the combat, just let the game auto-resolve). I even had to ask GOG to remove my review (it could be so much simpler if there existed on the site a feature to change it) and the poor rating I had given the game.
I am taking 1 star because the formation of the Council is too dumb. There is no way for you to introduce two alien species and if they never get to explore each other the council will simply never form. I didn't know that so imagine my surprise when I figured this out looking for answer in the internet to "why does the Council never formed? I so late in the game, I have already eliminated a faction and the Council will not form so I can't win through Diplomacy". Then I realized my great plan to cut the Galaxy in half, grabbing the center and Orion in the process actually would force me to win everyone through military conquest (I had set the game to be won through military or diplomacy only).
I could take 1 star because the ending doesn't feel like an ending. I conquered every single Planet in the galaxy and the ending told me that almost every threat to my civilization had been dealt with. Almost? What's left? I'm not going to though because most 4X suffer from this kind of stuff.
I could also take another 1 star because the late techs have some pretty pretentious names, like Omniscience and what else. I'm a Catholic Christian so this makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, but good chances you won't ever get there anyway unless choose a real fast tech gain during setup (I played on a big galaxy, conquered everyone and wasn't close to get there). So I am NOT taking another 1 star.
Oh, lastly, make sure your PC can handle the late game if you want to play on a "too big map".
I have played this and found it to be distinctly meh. The voicing is decent enough, the graphics are decent enough too, but the gameplay is pretty barebones.
I actually prefer Moo2 or even *shock horror* 3, which isnt actually that bad if you get the fan patches.
I just wasn't that impressed. It is distinctly generic and nothing special.
There are so many better Moo inspired games out there.
