Mable & The Wood is a Metroidvania where you hunt down massive beasts and, upon destroying them, shapeshift into their forms in order to use their powers to save or destroy the world. Players with less violent intent can find secret paths to complete Mable without killing anything, including bosses.
Unlike most Metroidvanias Mable does not allow you to run, jump and kill on your own. Instead, you must use non-human forms to attack creatures and traverse through difficult challenges.
The strange cult that resurrected you speak of an ancient prophecy that says you will hunt down the great beasts, take their shape, and use their powers to save this dying world. But what if they're wrong? The prophecy is old, and words lose their meaning with time...
When the world is falling apart around you, what will you do? In Mable & The Wood, it's up to you to make that choice. You don't have to kill anyone, but you might kill everyone.
Will you banish the darkness, or will you become it?
COMBAT IS MOVEMENT
The way you move is deadly. Dragging a sword that is too heavy to lift, Mable shape-shifts into a fairy and leaves it where she stood. Recall the sword to your hand once again to slice through any enemies in your path.
You can only maintain your non-human form for a limited time, but killing creatures extends your power.
HUNT THE GREAT BEASTS AND TAKE THEIR SHAPE
Defeat the great beasts to take their shape and transform into a mole, medusa, spider and more...
Find and defeat the other bosses to unlock even more shapes!
EXPLORE A DYING WORLD
The game takes place in a dark fantasy world, with each area making up part of a large, complex map that's packed full of all kinds of secrets for you to discover.
Uncover secrets that you can use to find alternative, non-combat routes through the world and discover a different side to the story (and multiple endings!)
DISCOVER WHO YOU REALLY ARE
Discover a rich story and define your own role in it. Will you become the saviour everyone's trying to convince you to be, or will your actions lead to the world literally tearing itself apart?
Features

Multiple endings, different routes to take through the world and secrets to discover
I am only 3 bosses into the game and I am thoroughly enjoyoing myself. The enemies are challenging without being too hard for my slower reflexes, and while the story is somewhat surface level right now, it would not kill the game if it never got deeper. I have been recommending this game to my friends and coworkers.
This has some interesting spins on the usual mixture of combat and platforming, but it grows somewhat stale over the course of the game.
Initially you won't directly attack enemies, and instead have a sword that is "tethered" to your character. You hook it into a surface and can then move around for a limited amount. When you pull the sword towards you it will slice up anything that is inbetween.
This is your attack and how you platform as well, since your character can't jump at all. Eventually you get different forms that change how these elements work, but essentially they're all twisted versions of standard game-play mechanics.
For a little while it makes for some interesting game-play, as it subverts how you would normally approach things. But in the end you just do the same stuff you would in a title with more conventional controls, only now it's a bit more fiddly to do anything.
There's the odd moment where this approach feels quite nifty, but it also means that boss-battles are quite simplistic, as it doesn't seem to really fit with providing adrenaline packed challenges. Either that or they just didn't do a very good job with them.
Sometimes it's a pretty standard arrangement of traps and set-pieces in the level design that occassionally feel like they don't suit this "unique" control scheme, whereas sometimes it works.
There's the odd sloppily done bit with bugs and glitches that lessens it overall, and the bland graphics aren't made up for by the pleasant music.
It just about remains playable and engaging, but just because it does things differently doesn't mean that its any better than a conventional example of the genre. And in many ways this is still pretty average, albeit not a bad game overall.
...instead, I'm told I have to vanquish some random critters because (checks notes) that would 'bring the dawn'. The result is a poorly looking, malevolent parody of a metroidvania. Nondescript room after nondescript room, dead end after dead end, no discovery, no sense of wonder, no thrill at exploring a new world. No point playing it further.
Mabel And The Wood? More like Mabel In The Trash Can.
Decent metroidvania that combines innovative combat via movement through multiple shapeshifting forms. Different forms gives you unique ways to move and interact with the environment.
The story had a lot of potential to be great but there is no climax at the end with no additional information beyond the reveal of who Mabel really is. That being said the overarching story would actually make for a good Manga or Anime that would be nice to delve deeper into the lore.
Music is great because it fits the characteristics of the game very well, there was a segment in the forest where it reminded me of the musical score in Chrono Trigger.
There are a lot of glitches in this game, however none of them should be game-breaking since if you get stuck in wall you can use the mole-form to dig your way out (most of the time).
I wouldn't bother with the pacifist route, the idea seems good of paper but bad in practice as you'll be even more frustrated without additional forms.
The dumbest idea in the game is making Mabel lose her diamonds after taking a hit, just like Sonic loses his rings. It disincentivizes people from even bothering collecting them since you'll lose them just as easy. Speaking of diamonds you'll never see the shop keeper again unless you backtrack for useless potions.
Additional effort into the pacing of the story, more explanations, revelations, bug fixes, quick travel way points and maybe a graphics update would go a long way to making this game even better.
