Excellent GOG
I remember this as a kid. Played it a lot until medieval and rome total war. The campaign map is still, to this day, better then any total war game!

Great Strategy game!
I played the SNOT out of this game in college. Heck, my roommates and I fought over who'd get the computer to play this. One friend macro-managed everything and another micro-managed each individual person to set up the perfect position. built huge castles and dared large armies to attempt to overthrow them. This is one of those games you will keep picking up and playing year after year

Great game, but beware micromanagement
This game is great—fantastic combination of tactics and logistics. Balancing production, happiness, and military is difficult and rewarding. Only problem is the micromanagement. When growing wheat, you have to make small adjustments to the number of people growing grain in each territory in each turn, or else you get wasted labour or an insufficient harvest. Why not just have a button that allows you to do the minimum required work to harvest the entire crop? It'd save so much time.

Great game
Old but great. Simple and addictive. Played too many hours and repeated those maps. Now i am ready to repeat it all again.

Painfully Slow To Play
I've given this game a good go and do actually enjoy it but progress even three maps into the campaign just becomes painfully slow. As others have pointed out the Ai is a bit overpowered to say the least and the game is in no way forgiving on the player. As such the only consistent stratergy to win seems to be to turtle down defend what you have and slowly grind the Ai down through attrition to its economy. The only problem is this will take you 5 or 6 hours even by the third campaign map. There is some fun to be had on some of the skirmish maps once in a while, and the fundermentals of the gameplay are fun but unfortuantly play out in a way that makes the game horrifically slow to play on the campaign especially.
