Little Nightmares blew my mind. I got into it with very little expectations and knowledge about the game and have to say it swept me of my feet.
The Artstyle, the music, the story - it all fits together perfectly. The only let down are the controls for mouse and keyboard its a bit hard to get used to them and it is better to use a controller but still very much playable with mouse and keyboard.
The puzzles of the game are never too hard nor too easy.
The game is finished in a couple of hours but it is worth the price and has replayabillity. I am excited for the sequel coming out soon. If you haven't picked it up yet now is a good time to get into the Little Nightmares universe. It is definitely one of the best platformers I played so far.
This is a very "Limbo" type of game, so this should be the first thing to consider when buying it or not.
Personally, this is not my type of game, although the macabre atmosphere is masterfully crafted.
But in any case I think the price is quite high for something you can beat in less than five hours.
Little Nightmares is not as good as Limbo or Inside because the 2.5D control are a little wonky and the dark graphics sometimes make it a bit hard to see what is expected of you. But on story I'd say it's equal.
Little Nightmares is totally better than Darq and Creaks because the puzzles are way more interestingly designed and varied throughout, Still sometimes a bit infuriating until you get it right. Also Little Nightmares stays true to it's concept and does not suddently switch to different Genres or concepts, like Darq. But still mixing things up nicely, instead of staying with the same old, same old for the entire game, like Creaks.
That Little Nightmares is rather short is a good thing and it's better leaving you wanting more - which it does - than clearly outstaying it's welcome,
If you want more there is the Expension Pass that takes place BEFORE the main game and delivers a genious connection between these two.
It does not make any sense to get only a single episode, since they are all parts of one story. Though, IMHO, the puzzle design is more infuriating in the DLC due to the same wonky controls and a ramped up difficulty than in the main game But it's manageable. The story is on par, too.
slowburn beginning. mediocre uninspired level recycled dlc. nonexisting story told mostly through interpretation and the creepy world reminiscent of Hauru no ugoku shiro (howls moving castle). conflicts between spacial perception and camera, which sometimes make platforming a bit too unintuitive. loses the horror too quick at points. pointless filler inbetween the good sections. not very long, only 5 hrs basegame and 1 hr dlc. ugly post process effects like chromatic garbage, depth of shitfield which you need to disable all in the .ini file. a bad control scheme you can´t change when playing with a gamepad, unless you use an external program. forgettable ambient soundtrack. very, very linear.
you will like the game nontheless, since its original, has a unique style and you wanna see it all to the end, even with nothing to be told about the story, the world grips you and thats enough, it gets better the more you reach the end.
The game looks gorgeous, and hits the right notes for the mood it's trying to portray. Felt genuinely creepy & eerie. Except for those moments where you fall into a pit even though you were sure you could make that jump.
The game has a problem with perspective. It's in 3D space, but has a fixed camera like it's a 2D platformer, and very little in the way of indications of where objects are in relation to other objects, so you'll often find yourself hitting obstacles that you thought you'd clear, or missing jumps you thought you'd make. There was one section where all I had to do was walk in a straight line, and managed to die 3 times because I accidentally stepped too far to one side of the pipe I was walking across, because it's hard to know if you're centered when you only see the side of the object.
This makes for poor gameplay, which is a shame, since this game is reliant entirely on gameplay and art direction for it's charm, as story is a very thin veneer. You just need to survive each room and make it to the next, until you find yourself at the end of the game. Your motivations and backstory are left to your imagination. Although, It does manage to maintain its wonderful atmosphere throughout the game, but seeing as I completed the game in under 3 hours, it shouldn't have been in any danger of wearing out its welcome regardless.
I also had some problems with the scripting physics in the game. After one cut scene, a monster left the room and knocked over a cage. There was an object I needed to reach, but couldn't. I tried standing on the knocked over cage, and it was still out of reach. After exhausting all options, I restarted from my last checkpoint, and this time, the monster did not knock over the cage, and I could just drag it to the right place and stand on it to reach the object that I couldn't before. This seems like a QA fail.
Overall though, I did enjoy the game, but at $25 CAD @ full price, I'd recommend waiting for a sale if you're interested.
