Excellent.

It's been a long time since I played such a good point and click. I grew up with this genre and, to be honest, it feels a bit outdated by today's standards. But playing something like this brings back great memories and gives me hope that there's still room to explore this style of game. It's really good, I loved the aesthetics and the story is great. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm really enjoying it.

Don't let anyone know

The Last Door gets four stars instead of five for only one reason - let's face it, it's not really a game. It's really an interactive story. TLD is a game with : * very easy puzzles (I suck at adventure games, and I was stuck only once in the entire game, and that's because I didn't notice one of the things on screen was clickable) ; * a game world with a very limited interactivity (even as adventures games go) ; * 8 bit graphics that, surprisingly, immerse you in the game even more ; after 5 minutes, you're totally used to it and thank the gods that you don't get to see every horryfing detail in glorious 3D graphics. But! TLD!Is! Also! A game with : * a great little story. It begins as an effective, but classical horror story. A bit of Lovecraft, a bit of Poe, a bit of Chambers. Then, things get a turn for the surreal, atmospheric, occult, more unusual. David Lynch will be taking the directing from now on. The ending leaves things open-ended, the mystery only got started. A second season is in the works, but you'll have to visit the develppers' site to play the several available episodes ; * the sound design is stellar. Great gothic music, sound effects that alert you as to what is happening beyong the little conforting light pool created by your oil-lamp. All in all, a neat little game. As a matter of fact, I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft, and this little 8-bit gem with a little budget comes miles closer to emulating the feeling of his writings than big budget productions such as Alan Wake.

"Puzzles" kill atmosphere

I tried this game because, by the descriptions and reviews, it was supposed to be "Lovecraftian". And I'm into anything by/related/inspired by Lovecraft. Well, I played until half of the third chapter, that is, more than half game. And I haven't seen nothing really Lovecraftian, scary, or, to be true, even interesting. In the few moments that the plot gains momentum and starts to involve you, there is the tipical adventure "puzzle" of clicking on everything in the screen and your inventory to see what happens. To be sincere, I always had this problem with classic adventures, but when you are playing a fun Lucas Arts-style game, the illogical solutions could be understood as part of the mood. But when yoy are playing a suspense/horror game, no mood or atmosphere could resist to this. "Ok, I have this broken object, and ok, I understand that I must use the stricky thing on the screen to glue it. Oh, but it seems that I have to have a glass to collect it. Look, a bottle! Ops, I can't use the bottle that is in front of me to collect the damned sticky stuff in front of me to fix the broken thing just in my hands. That is so cool!". About the most striking feature of the game, the 8-bit graphics, they really aren't a problem. But they don't help, either. If they give room to imagination, they also hinder immersion. But don't get me wrong, the game is not a complete disaster. If you are really into the puzzle-solving style of classic adventures, and be able to avoid getting stuck so often, you will finish the game in few hours, and probably enjoy better the plot. Ah, and the sound is really good, best feature. Play with headphones!

Amazing game

This is one of the best adventure games I've ever played - the retro-style graphics fits perfectly with the mood, the soundtrack is absolutely stunning and the story makes you want more and more. Can't wait for the Season 2!

Short and incomplete, but interesting

The game consists of four 'episodes' which should take you about 30 minutes to complete and if I remember correctly every episode uses a 'scary walk through a haunted house' sequence. That combined with the very simple puzzles means that there really isn't all that much gameplay, all the gameplay basically boils down to going back to a room you've been to to use an item you got in a new room in order to open the door to yet another new room. Graphically.. well you've seen the screenshots, it's not great. It's barely functional. There are good looking games with 'pixel art', this is not one of them IMO. The music in the game is decent and sets the mood for the 'Lovecraftian' story. A few points that might be interesting: I don't think you can die in the game, the story is not complete and the developer is working on the next expisodes, there is very little interactivity except for those things in the world you have to manipulate in order to advance the story and there is no manual saving. I also had a few Adobe Air crashes in the third episode, but since the game automatically saves your position in the episode this is not a huge deal. Although you will have to watch the unskippable logo movies again.
