King of Dragon Pass

One of my favorites, very original

KoDP is not a perfect game. So why do I think it's worth 5 stars? Because what KoDP does it does perfectly. It immerses you into the world of Glorantha and forces you to learn the somewhat twisted internal logic of the Orlanthi people and to adopt an archaic view of the world. If you have ever been interested in early 20th century anthropology, you are going to love this game - you feel like an anthropologist trying to make sense of the different deities, stories that directly affect the future of your tribe and the complex politics of a bronze age society. There are no easy answers and you can never succeed by just trying to play "the good guy". You are walking in the steps of your forefathers and their wrath is truly terrible to behold if you betray the teachings of your elders. Taking slaves and committing honor murders can be just and honorable deeds as long as they are according to the traditions of your tribe. Most games that are often mentioned as the best PC games of all time are highly flawed games: XCOM, System Shock 2 and Ultima Underworld all have huge flaws. But people are willing to forgive these flaws since these games offer something that highly polished, dumbed down games can never give. Count KoDP as one of these flawed jewels.

This game is unique and has an infinity amount of replayability. If you don't use the save-load technique, you are up against a really great but interesting challenge. This ain't an action game, so people with low IQ please abstain. ;) hehe! Also, the game world is the first role playing game world ever invented, even before Gary Gygax's... although, it got published way after with the RuneQuest game system (a simple and fun one, better than any version of the Dungeons & Dragons game system). The game world was also inspirational. Many tried to copy it's ideas like Game Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (chaos comes from Rune Quest's game universe btw, it's not a Games Workshop Idea). All in all, buy this one, it's worth every penny in opposition to most post year 2000 games which are superficial, shallow and/or have low or no replayability value.

This game is FANTASTIC. I discovered it by chance due to a Youtube Let's Play... and I got immediately interested. I could find an hard copy a few years ago and I spend many hours playing this game. It's a mix of strategy role-playing and adventure. In this game you are leading a clan in a place called Dragon Pass. The essence of the game is basically being confronted with various situations and making choices which will affect the future, for example some choices might make your warriors happy, other will make your farmers happy. Moreover you must choose how to allocate your magic, to wage war or not, to forge alliances, etc... Note some find the learning curve of this game a bit steep, but once you understand it it's very enjoyable. I beat it on "hard" difficulty and I am not really an "hardcore" gamer. Note it requires a fair amount of reading too, so this is not a game for people who only like rapid action. It's pure role-playing strategy at its best. Frankly I cannot recommend this game enough! One of my personal favorite.

Fantasy Viking style , kept at it until I succeeded. occasional crashes, but nicely written, a mix of strategy , management and cows, also Ducks!
