retro platforming gem with charm

Can't believe this game doesn't have a review here yet (as of writing). I own this on Steam (I wish I'd waited for GOG), so I'm here to say THIS IS A GOOD GAME. It's pixely, and the art direction is a GOOD MIX of retro charm and modern style. The story is very charming, weird, well written and funny. You play a frog who gets sent on jobs to fix some weird stuff happening around teleporters... sounds hi-tech but you're more of an average-joe who gets shouted at by their boss. It's all pretty LIGHT and FUN. The platforming is good, there is variety and creativity in the levels, and there are different bullet types to unlock. It's not very long, but some things in life are best kept short. If you're looking for a game to kick back with that's STRAIGHTFORWARD and easy to get into, and you like retro platformers that pack a decent challenge but are not frustrating, try this!

Cave Story lite

Simple but fun platformer. Daisuke Amaya proves once again that he is the master of this genre.

This game is a (kero) blast!

I gotta say, Pixel knows how to make a good game. The characters are adorable, the story is fun and interesting, and the bosses are hard as nails yet so satisfying to beat! I first played Kero Blaster back in 2014 on iOS when it first came out, and I had no idea it got an update since then. Now there's a second harder mode with a new story, plus a hidden third mode... (whoops, don't want to share too much!)

Has only one fault: too short!

In my second playthrough of Kero Blaster I thought : it's been years, I don't think this game will have the same impact on me''.... OH BOY! was I wrong! Kero Blaster, spiritual successor of the indie pillar ''Cave story'', manages to be a exceptional 2d sidescrolling platform with an amazing yet simple shooting mechanics. And that's the point: simplicity. Before anything, I want to clarify, Simple doesn't mean rushed or uninspired: simple, when done properly, is very hard to achieve but extremely effective. The whole game is based on few features, but extremely well done and so well implemented that the game becomes addicting. Every weapon, monster or upgrade has been studied in order to reach a heavenly level of perfection( after all, this IS the creator of Cave story). Besides that, story and soundtracks are like the game's pixellated graphics: cute and astonishing. Usually I keep on arguing why a game should be played, but, truth to be told, this game doesn't need any explanation: if you love platform-shooting games.. or gaming in general, higher then this game you don't go. So, Yes. pest control has never been this fun. A big huge ribbiting YES right there!

Simply FUN

Kero Blaster is one of those games that are simple yet incredibly fun, if you look at the screenshots, you basically get the whole idea of the game. It's platformer shooter about a salaryfrog going around levels filled with monsters in order to fix his company's teleporters that are being interfered with. You can walk, jump, shoot, and there are a few different guns with unique attributes, but that's about it. These simple mechanics can be combined to create any kind of strategy you want, and the levels are carefully designed to not force you to use a certain gun, although some guns will be more beneficial in certain situations. The pixelated graphics and chiptune music fit perfectly with the simplicity of the game, yet still provide a memorable and enjoyable experience. The story is light and the characters are funny, it will give you a laugh or two. But the gameplay is where is really shines. Like I said, the simplicity of the mechanics is what makes it so good, by allowing you a great degree of freedom in how you play the game, the levels and enemies are well designed and challenging but not frustratingly difficult, and there is plenty of content to enjoy, especially if you want a greater challenge. The simplicity of it also makes it a game you can pick up any time for a quick break or if you're short on time, there's no deep lore involved or a commitment to long hours of gameplay, just plain ol' video game fun. Check out Pink Hour and Pink Heaven if you want a little more about the universe of Kero Blaster. Also Cave Story, from the same creator, because it's DAMN GOOD. Wine compatibility (for me): Flawless, had zero issues with it. Wine version: 7.14.
