Charming adventure game set in the 90's

Kathy Rain is the story of a motorcycle riding rebellious young woman who revisits her hometown after hearing word of her grandfather's death in the paper. Being estranged from her family, she reunites with them for the first time in years and senses something off about her grandfather's death, Kathy pokes around town and does some detective work to get to the bottom of the strange happenings. Its a great setup, but honestly the story just didn't pick up enough steam for me by the end. And the endgame was a little...weird. This is a traditional inventory puzzler adventure game not unlike the Sierra and LucasArts titles that were popular in the 90's. In fact, this particular title reminds me a bit of Gabriel Knight, as you'll be interviewing key characters and piecing together clues from your inventory and tape recorder. Quality of life features are present here, such as the greying out of locations no longer needed (cutting down on aimless wandering). As with most modern adventure games, you won't have to worry about dying or having to restart your game because you forgot to pick up a rusted nickel from a vending machine in the second chapter. There are some pretty gorgeous backgrounds and the character models are expressive. The artwork gets the moody tone of the game just right. The music tracks were decent but not memorable. The riff going between scenes on her bike was pretty good. The voice acting was also well done. Most puzzles were challenging, some were very easy, with just a couple "wtf" moments. As with many adventure games with a cursor interface, sometimes you end up solving puzzles before you figure out why you're doing it. Overall the game is challenging but not too difficult for adventure game veterans, though I have to admit there were a couple puzzles that had me scratching my head. Typically, there are hints to the puzzles in the dialog and tape recordings, so if you pay attention you'll be ok.

Good game, but...needs trigger warnings

TL;DR: Overall I found the game interesting a worth playing, but also pretty frustrating with too many loose ends by the time the credits roll. One specific moment shocked me in a bad way and I took off a star. I do plan to play the sequel, which I have heard is better. DETAILS: The best parts were the interactions, the art, the likable and interesting characters, and the nostalgic point-and-click feel. Some of the puzzles were pretty cool - I liked the stuff that had to do with a computer and the police station. It was fun to hear Kathy and Eileen converse about stuff in their room. My biggest concern (that dropped a star for me) was the huge tone shift in the middle and end with a really horrific plot point that could be *extremely* triggering for someone who has trauma regarding abortion or miscarriage. Something like that should *not* come as a surprise 3/4s of the way through the game. The way they handled it was also offensive to me. It felt like there was a pro-life agenda, and was just handled in a crass manner. On the lighter side, I found the back and forth between locations and the unskippable loading and motorcycle scenes in between really started to drag on the experience. You see an item when you first go to a location, can't pick it up, and when it becomes relevant later, you're forced to retrace your steps to go grab it. Sometimes the item you went back and forth for only gets used once (looking at you metal detector). I had to look up a walkthrough twice to solve puzzles that just made no sense to me. The solutions made me roll my eyes (if you've played the game, I was shocked by the clinic solution and rather cross with the third step of the safe puzzle which I thought was talking about life spans). Lastly I didn't really feel like the ending resolved everything. When the credits rolled I thought "that's it?" There are so many questions I still have. Feels like a cliffhanger meant to entice you to play the sequel.

Splendid

Great example of what an adventure game can be. A small story, using the usual puzzle mechanics available for progressing. Mix in good humor and some mystery, and most importantly, not make it unnecessary long for the sake of it. I played the original recently, so getting the extra seasoning on this playthrough was a nice addition.

Fabulous!

I grew up with classic point and click adventures from Sierra and this game really hit a nerve for me. The graphics, scenery, sounds and dialogues are really captivating. The majority of quests and riddles are not overly hard and you're getting hints in some places. It got a little bit too spooky for my taste in the end but overall a real masterpiece.

Wonderful game

Oh how I loved to play this. For me it was a very atmospheric experience. Wonderful and thrilling, mysterious story and great voice acting and visuals. I also do recommend Whisper of a machine and Norco, which share Raw Fury and style, though some game mechanics are different in each, and Norco has no voice acting which is sad. Buy it, or better all three !! Puzzles are great and solvable. No frustration, at least for me.
